Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

Don at LDS will build a cab like this to your specs.
A box that sounds this good, not nearly as nice, and a few lbs heavier would not be beyond what your local carpenter / cabinetmaker could build either.

the logo is going to be very simple. to make it i just used my signature (like how i sign checks and receipts) and blew it up in photoshop. then i cut it out of a piece of .125" lexan with a dremel, and painted the back of it with silver lexan paint.

here's a pic of it laying on top of the cab:

if i was to give it a 'name' i'd call it the 'Starliner' (like a '60 ford starliner) and put one of these emblems in the center of the bottom, but they want $500-700 just for those emblems these days!

What a great looking, well built cabinet. If you ever wanted to start building them for sale, I am in the market for a new 2x15............................... :D

i really don't intend to get into building, selling (and shipping!)cabs, but if someone just had to have one like this one i might be able to be talked into it ;), since i have an extra grill and ALOT of the herculiner left (i bought a gallon of it), but i can tell you right now, it wouldn't be cheap. i'm sure that Don at LDS could build you one for ALOT less, and he does great work.

You should definitely leave the grill as is, and redo the logo in black, but mask any "negative space" in it when you paint it, so that it shows clear through to the aluminum (ie the hole in the middle of the "o"). Having the thing be all black would make it a bit too monotone. Blue would be cool too, like the "blue line" blue (or ACC blue).

Touche. Can't wait to order my cab from Don this fall!!! 1515/6/1 ;)

this cab got me thinking about building myself a smaller & lighter sealed 2x12 version for smaller venues, but instead of using 3012HO's (which i find to be a bit too midrangy), and use two 2512's instead, since i love them so much in my sealed V4 cab.

Thank you John! I'm desperately looking for a reason to start a new unnescesary cab build. I have these two ported diy 12/6 cabs with 2512's that are doing just fine, exept for them being a bit heavy on the low end for my double bass. (nothing a little eq can't help) I have been thinking about turning them into a sealed 2*12/2*6 cab. You've just pushed me over the edge.

yeah, i think i like the 2512's in sealed cabs more than ported. now that i'm getting used to the 2x15, i'm going to try it tomorrow with the ports sealed again to see if i like it better that way. right now i'm cutting a bit of the low end on it with theports open.

i can't imagine how much low end a 3015LF would put out.

Very nice John. Inspiring! I really like the logo, visually it pops.

My personal preference would be to anodize the screen black to avoid visible fingerprints on the bare metal but it would be expensive. A scuffed or brushed bare metal finish might work as well. Aluminum can be so hard to get the paint to stick. Maybe the bed liner on the screen would work.

I think a pinated screen with anything but 2-part polyurethane would be hard to keep from scratching. Not sure about the left coast but annodizing here for something that large would be pricey. I figured you'd go straight to vintage grill cloth.

I've used the SEM paint for show car restoration; how is the adhesion and scuff resistance?

Consider the cut sheet ; sketches for sale if you have the time.
It would help many to build better cabinets.
Once again, congrats on another fine project; really good design and build quality,
