it does not look like I will be playing any time soon. work is backing up on my, and I doubt I will even get a day off for a couple weeks:rollno:

hang in there. The other way around for me. Not that it's bad, but May has been a huge amount of family stuff, and a lot of work stuff too. I'm looking forward to getting back into action on bass. In the next five days, three practices are coming up with three different groups. Thursday night, on upright with this crazy jazz fusion project in Queens - it's sort of my audition but I'm not worried about it. I've put in the time and charted their (original) material. Saturday, the blues/oldies project on the '51 P reissue, plus these guys now want me to play mandolin on several songs, which is a blast although I'm way under-practiced for it. Sunday, the Vague Assurances, so back in the family so to speak. I like to play with folks every chance I get because it keeps your ears and hands in the groove. :bassist:

I know I can do it..how well I can execute it remains to be seen, though.

The band I was in for many years I sang backups and maybe 1 or 2 leads a night. When I signed on with my current country band everyone (5 of us) were expected to take a turn singing. They knew I only had 3 songs that fit the format but I was determined to carry my load. I've now got 25 songs where I sing lead and find with each new one I learn find it is easier to do and that I'm now singing songs I would never, never have dreamed I could do well. Each new song I've learned has been with the purpose of learning new phrasing techniques, music style or forcing me to hit notes I never attempted before.

Initially I looked for songs that had fairly simple bass parts so I could focus on the vocals but as I've become more comfortable singing the bass parts can be any style.

Singing is exactly like learning an instrument. You didn't pick up your bass and start playing awesome right away, you had to work at it. Singing takes work to learn and the confidence to do it but it is definitely worth it. I get an absolute rush when someone says "wow you did a great job on that tune".

Never heard that about my bass playing before.

lol, I don't feel so bad having ten or so. :bassist:

The Barker is really cool. I play a fair amount of jazz but I don't have an EUB. If a double bass is too big for the gig, I use the '78 fretless P. I've thought about getting an EUB but they are not exactly cheap. (Not that they should be.)
If you ever want to borrow it for a gig just give me a shout .... we're not all that far away from each other :)

The Barker is waayyy easier to carry around. People have no idea how much space a DB takes up when moving it, not to mention the basic fragile nature of the thing. The Barker is, in essence, a vertical bass guitar so playing it isn't a huge challange. Mine is a 35" scale neck, but the huge majority of Lee's basses are 34" scale Warmoth necks, fretted and fretless (lined or unlined), 4 string configuration.

Very close to a true DB sound, or as close as anything electric can be. The bass is chambered, which really brings out the sustain. And the upright configuration makes you think DB-style when you're playing.

I'd love to get an Eminence electric DB with the detachable neck but I can't justify the cost vs the amount of gig time it would get .... did you ever play one, Chuck?

I am so ready for the weekend. We are celebrating the youngest's birthday on Saturday..other than that, I plan on sleeping!!

after just celebrating the youngest's college graduation last weekend, I plan on playing bass! :bassist:

actually started the weekend tonight with a new venture, playing upright with two guys who write their own jazz/rock fusion material. They have a female singer as well, although she wasn't there tonight as the instruments have plenty to work on before she gets involved. I had prepped pretty hard for this - had to chart all their stuff, which is fairly complicated. Seems like I passed the test ... although my right hand fingers are ready to fall off.

Saturday, practice with the blues/oldies venture that I expect will result in gigs by July or so. Sunday, practice with the Vague Assurances.

Did I say I plan on playing bass this weekend? :bassist:

This weekend is gonna be crazy for me too. Childhood best friend coming over tomorrow, gonna spend the night. We're bar hopping, popping some mollys and getting absolutely ridiculous. Saturday, got some township birthday thingy. Gonna fill my Fiji bottle with vodka and walk around the carnival. The rest will probably be history. We have an impact resistant video camera so it should be really interesting to see what events unfold. I may partake in a jam if I get loaded enough. :)

Just got back to the O-town. CD Release party on Friday night. Bands & Bikes on Saturday day....and Miss PA is in town for a few days, so Saturday night we'll be painting the town REDREDRED! Thursday we're going up to the Cabbage Patch to see Mr. Clement and wreak havoc on the garden..... :D FM - wish you were here!!!
