But again - I love big bass rigs, don't get me wrong.

Honestly, the weight is the only thing keeping me from having 2 BagEnd 410 cabinets. I don't want a rig that weighs the same I do.
Are the BagEnd 4ohm cabinets?

I'm reading all the bass cab posts on here with interest, but I have to say I'm going in the opposite direction. I'm interested in my bands having a fat-ass front of the house PA system that can handle bass, such that I can use a small Genz Benz head and monitor back where I am. I totally understand the rationale of doing it your way, but as time goes on I think the FOH way of looking at it is better. Long topic, I know. The "Live Sound" forum is where I hang out on TB besides CWB. The Shoemakers are my secondary band and not that talented but the mains are serious 15s that can handle bass fine. Plus there's the option of subwoofers.
Or, to put it differently, someone other than me can carry all that heavy stuff.
Seriously, I try to look at it from the audience's point of view, and I think a fully mixed band at the FOH point of attack is enjoyed more than the mega rig approach.
Again, just my .02, and I love big rigs too.
C3, totally see your angle on it. A good friend of mine here uses a pair of the mackie hd systems ( 2x15 sub, and 2x 15 full range). He gets a great sound, tons of head room, great for the band.
I mainly use my modular setup to scale appropriately for my gigs because most venues we play don't have sound reinforcement. We have a pair of SP5s and powered monitors. I go through them to even out our sound but I'd have trouble hearing my bass on some venues w just the one cube. I have to carry gear anyway so it's a wash for me.
At gigs w big reinforcement, I'll bring only what I need.
My main thought behind making a 2x15 is to increase the internal volume of the cabinet for a lower frequency response, and to make it with lighter birch and internal bracing to lighten it up some.
What initially motivated me was reading a post where an Aguilar GS 212 outperformed a pair of 1x12s in depth and punch.

I kind of cruised into a place where it was on stage, the guy had a little Mark hed and a Baggie 15, it was dark so I didn't get the full scoop, plugged the Ibby in and went with it, it handled the P sound well on the 4. I had to back out the low slightly to smooth it out.
In the AMPS FAQ there is a whole section of DIY build links. Take a few minutes and zip through those before you build.
Also, playing with the software called WinISD (shareware), one of the first highlighted links, will tell you a lot about the effects of changing box sizes, assuming you can get the T/S parameters of the drivers or something similar.
