D Standard Club (DGCF)

Earlier this week I installed Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky (45-105) rounds on my Peavey. I tuned it DGCF, as I've been doing for the past six months or so. Last night, on a whim, I tuned it up to EADG standard tuning. You guys, I freakin' love it. I'm taking a break from DGCF. Tuning EADG felt like a completely new instrument, in a good way. I mean, I've been playing for 20 years now. Over the years I've tuned ADGC, DGCF, BEAD and EADG, as well as ADGCF and BEADG, but the majority of that was EADG. My muscle memory is great and the bass just feels so much more "alive".

Thanks for the good times, but I'm going back to E standard for the foreseeable future!

Latest experiment for the weak-necked bass tuned to D Standard: a custom set of 40-55-75-100 Chromes. The bass will be gaining a second pickup in mid-January, and I'll fit them after that work is done.

(The actual tension will be 30-32 lbs per string, very balanced; I've played other detuned Chromes that came out at even lower tensions and found them firm enough, so I've no worries about this)

Considering Fender flats. Does anyone have any insight regarding Fender 9050L (45-100) in D Standard? I currently have Rotosound RS66 45-105 on it (D Standard) and I'm pretty happy with the tension, but I've kind of got the itch for flats.
Sorry to reply late to this post, but I just spotted it. I use 9050L strings on my Jazz, and started out with them in E standard tuning. A year in, I found out about this thread and decided to detune that bass to D standard. The strings are just fine in this tuning, and I've kept this bass tuned down ever since. Since they are flats, they seem to be less sensitive to tension than rounds.
:D

I came across this video in an article on Blabbermouth.net. It's the heavy metal band Dirkschneider (featuring Peter Baltes on bass) live last weekend and they're tuned to D Standard. This is Udo Dirkschneider's band in which they only play classic Accept songs.

I have never heard some of these amazing songs in D Standard until I watched the video. The original versions of these songs are in standard tuning. But they tuned to D Standard to support Udo's singing as he's aged.

Just got this bass back, with the 40-55-75-100 Chromes tuned to D Standard - they work. No floppiness, still properly responsive.

I noticed that this set of gauges is similar to the 760FX set, which also was fine in D Standard. Overall tension is a little less than that LaBella, I think. (Not much, but enough that the neck with a maxed-out trussrod notices the difference)

I think I've finally found the right strings for this bass. But I might have said that before.

So I recently bought a new Sire P5 fretless bass and of course, it's tuned to D Standard. But it came with D'Addario Chromes that are not tense enough in the lower strings for D Standard. So I want to change them out for either the La Bella DTFs (either 49-109 or Jamerson Gauge) or La Bella Gold Flats (45-105). Which of these sets would you all recommend for my bass?

Thank you so much!

Is that the 45 65 80 100 ECB81 set?

I recently acquired a 1964 Gibson Thunderbird. It arrived with what I believe are ancient (pre-2014-NAMM) Rotosound RS66s on it. They feel and sound like I’d expect old, worn Rotos to. They still sound good, although the Angry Piano is lessened, and they don’t grate on the fingers as much. The truss rod nut was maxed out clockwise so I was nervous about changes with that low, low action, but detuning to D worked fine. After a few weeks, I switched to Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats (50-105) in D, and it’s still fine. I may need to back off the truss rod a hair. The photo is of the old and new D (E) strings. 105 EBCF. Unsure about the Roto.

If you considered modding the nut, why not get the 0760M-B set and ditch the 110, whilst tuning the 128 095 073 052 to DGCF
I've done this myself and the 128 works well as a D. The gauges are nice and balanced mathematically. And less string excursion with the higher tension is advantageous for very low action on a fretless.
Roughly comparable Chromes gauges would have tensions like so. The Jamersons are stiffer of course due to the bigger core, but having used them as well as the Chromes listed, the tensions felt similar and I never had to tweak the rod at all when swapping. So that tells me the tensions are similar

D1/132/54.73lbf
G1/.095/51.19lbf
C2/.075/56.99lbf
F2/.055/55.69lbf

TT= 218.60lbf

When the current rounds on my one and only bass are clapped out or I get sick of em ( I only put them on because I liked the gauges, which as you are aware from the Chromeys thread, D'addario doesnt do a 120 Chrome) I will grab another set of 0760M-B and do myself what I'm suggesting. Walking the walk as it were. Again

XL rounds. Gauges 65 80 120 145. Originally were gauges 67 90 120 145 tuned BEAD. I tapered the 145 myself. I swapped out the 67 and 90, as even though they could be tuned up to F and C respectively, the total tension in DGCF was 277lbf. I got it back to a more respectable total of 254lbf he he

The tensions are

D1/.145/58.68lbf
G1/.120/69.63lbf
C2/.080/56.70lbf
F2/.065/68.44lbf

TT=253.45lbf
Bass neck is sturdy. Truss rod nut still has some clockwise movement left in the tank.

Did you make that neck yourself?

Those are some really heavy strings for D Standard, especially the D and G! I hope your bass' truss rod doesn't break. 254 lb/ft is a LOT of tension for a 4 string neck!

I would have used the 145 gauge string for A0 - a whole fourth below D1 - and put it on a 5 string tuned ADGCF.

I found a 145 was still too floppy for me at B0 let alone A0.
Nothing has snapped he he. Nor do I expect any problems. Don't forget that SH77 Rotos or RS77LE have 250'ish tension in E standard.
