D'Addario NYXL Bass Strings

I put them on my pj. They're okay. I'm not blown away. They're nickel rounds. If they cost as much as their regular nickels then that's fine, but based on the price of the guitar strings, these will probably be expensive, right?

I don't know. They're really nothing special, IMO.

Soundclip - here's a new reggae line I wrote with no eq at all on the bass or the track. I just plugged my MTD Beast 5 (bart's and NTMB set flat) straight into a Scarlett 2i2. There's a couple of out of tune E's, please excuse my sloppy playing, lol... It's just bass and drums, headphones or monitors will probably sound best. I like these strings a lot! Gonna do a full jam tonight to see how they hold up.

I use NYXL's on my Jackson King V guitar. They have a tone that I really can't put into words. Believe the hype. I had no idea they were going to make bass strings out of that metal. Now I'm sitting on the edge of my seat!

So, as promised, here's my take on it: They're nice strings. I can hear a difference between these, the standard XL strings, and the LaBella strings I've used on my FNA. Even when it's not plugged in, I can get a lot closer to the sound in my head than I could before. I'm curious to see what selling price will be - but I'm definitely more impressed than I was thinking I would be.

Initial impressions: stable after two tunings and hard playing; the feel is more consistent between the strings than regular XL's; less "clanky" than regular XL's; low punch that is similar to nickel LoRiders, but with more extended highs; less compliant than similarly - gauged Dunlop SB nickels;
I like them, but I would probably like a lighter gauge more.

After a few days, I will give a more thorough review.

Yep - the one thing I didn't like....the gauging on the low B. I normally use a .125, this was .135. Huge difference in the feel.

they sound really good! and that's mostly what i'll be playing!

I can definitively say I don't like these strings. They're rough on the fingers in an unpleasant way. I really don't know how to explain that further but I don't mind roughness. I like the feel of Rotosound steels and Ernie ball cobalts. I just don't like the feel. The 45-100 set seems to have unusually high tension. And I don't like how they sound. It's all high end zing with no character. No depth. I don't know how to really describe them any better but I simply don't like these strings at all.

I like the feel of them. They feel the same as the XL's to me with a slight bit more tension. I like the way they sound. Very articulate. More so than the XL's. If they are going to cost more than the XL's I won't be buying them as often as I do the XL's which are very affordable as are the Dunlop Super Brights and SIT's (all under $20 4str. pack).

Pros: Compared to standard nickel XL's, I like this set a little better. They seem more balanced and less "clanky".
If you use a consistently medium/heavy attack, you like a string that punches nicely down low and gives you some bite to the attack, you might like these. More balanced string to string feel and output balance than XL nickels.

Cons: What I don't like is that I feel that they are more one-dimensional than strings that exhibit more compliance under the fingers. Not as full sounding unless I dig in, and I am getting less variation in the mids when I change my plucking technique. At the moment, a little too much zing for my tastes, but these have only been on for three days.

This recording is a quick 'n' dirty sampling of a bright-sounding USACG P5 + Nordstrand NP5; no eq; treble wide open.

If I were to make a *real* recording, I would clean up my attack and roll off the treble by about 30%.

After nearly a week, the brightness is still dominating, and it's a bit much for me. I prefer a mellower string sound to balance out my bright sounding P5.

The surface feel is coarser than the SB nickels; the B string has a forceful "whump" that you get from stiffer strings, but it lacks pitch focus; I will be changing out the strings soon.
