I was just about to bring up Tool, glad to see someone else did.
The only reason I have a bass tuned to DADG right now is when a cover band wants to play some Tool.
But then, I tune DGCF, so while the guitarists are re-tuning on stage or swapping out guitars for different songs, I'm chillin out and sippin on a beer because I play them all in the same tuning.
If it wasn't for fricken' Tool, I'd never need more than one bass for every gig.
(Excepting a backup, of course.)
One of the biggest benefits of a drop tuning like DADG is that you can play a riff on the 4th string, and then duplicate it an octave higher on the 2nd string with the exact same positioning. It makes for some interesting lines at times. I've actually dropped to CGCF at times when writing stuff with my brother (and for noodling along with Mudvayne).
