MBD2 has arrived and is happily living on my new Nano+ board. Time to wire this up and let ‘er rip!
This may have been discussed previously, but thought I’d mention it. My MBD1 and 2 are both capable of the same sounds, or at least capable of the same sound I want out of them (high gain dirt blended medium-low to the clean with a good aggression to the midrange and minimal clank), but they achieve this with slightly different knob settings.
Note the gain knobs and shift switches. These settings between the two boxes sounds almost identical. Not a problem, just a curiosity that I noticed when attempting to “transfer” my 1 settings to my 2.

I'd have to open it up to confirm, but I just left them at the factory default position.
Me neither. That said the level of distortion increased quite a bit with the shift switch in the down position regardless of tone knob setting. I'm guessing there's some interactivity between the tone circuit and the gain staging that causes this, but that's just speculation on my part.
I believe that's because with the toggle down, the upper mids are being accentuated as opposed to the lower mids with it up, so it will sound slightly brighter and more distorted.
I had that thought as well, but you'll notice that on both my 1 and my 2 the tone knob is centered. It's a tilt control per the manual, which would make me think that in the center the tilt is flat or close to it and shouldn't result in a large difference in apparent gain with the switch up or down, but on the 2 it most certainly does.
As people were getting the MBD-2, I was finally able to score a deal on a used MBD-1. This one was in bare aluminum and assembled by Dunn Effects, but I was able to score it for $160 shipped so I was happy with that. It's a very good pedal, and I like it a lot. I had purchased a loop blender in Dec, and planned to use it with some dirt pedals without clean blends, but I moved those when I got the MBD, so the Bloop went back.
For the MBD, I am using it as a very low gain always on OD with the blend and depth set to thicken the sound a bit. I find it is a similar sound to by old CAL Grizzly Bass, very transparent and very flexible. But both have very different controls, and if you take them to extremes, they will sound very VERY different. Next to the MBD is my custom paint Fuzzrocious Demon with a clean blend and 2nd drive. I have the Demon set up to give me a medium gain and a high gain. The Demon can get nasal sounding in a mid-gain, but activating the MBD before it gives it more weight and bottom end. So far, I like having the Demon run by itself in high gain, gives it more of a bite.
Looking at pedals I've used in the past trying to get that low gain sound, I've used the Pork Loin, Tubeworks Blue Tube, Dark Driving, Boss BB-1X, SS/BS Mini, CAL Grizzly and the Demon. Many of these were good to very good, I actually liked the Boss a lot, but it's really the Grizzly or the MBD in my opinion.
I'm still loving the MBD-2. I agree that it's similar to the Grizzly, at least in how I use it. I think the MDB has a more natural sounding OD and retains the lows better. I posted and sold my Grizzly about 20 minutes after receiving the MBD. I still have a Pork Loin but can't see using it again, though I'm probably going to keep it.
That's interesting. I owned a Grizzly before picking up my MBD1 and now MBD2. To my ears the Grizzly was just awful. Bordering on unusable. One of my least favorite bass ODs ever. By comparison the MBD1 has been my absolute all-time favorite.
I used mine with either a Jazz or a P-bass into a Bassman tube head. But I found the Grizzly to be just awesome, and it was my go to for just a bit of hair and bite for nearly 2 years. I always used a blend of OD and Distortion for the best sound.
But yes, the MBD is really good.
I used the Grizzly for only light OD sounds and for that it was fine. I wouldn't say the Grizzly is awful, but I like the MBD MUCH better.
