Damnation Audio Fan/Appreciation Thread

View attachment 3838855

Put the Mammoth Tamer on my board and moved the standard Bloop to my small board. The differences are subtle with pedals that are fine with buffered signals. To my ears, the MT has slightly tighter lows and sounds a bit more defined up top. So the original Bloop sounds like it low passes your dry tone more and fattens the bottom before you mix it back in. Maybe I’m crazy though.

Anyway, Damnation has a strong presence on both boards. I’m Blooping a GMP on my small board and it is a whole different beast. I really liked the GMP already as a OD and chunky distortion, but I was keeping the tone knob around noon to maintain the lows even though I wanted more high end emphasis. Now I can roll that thing up a good bit and the Bloop brings the thunder back in. It sounds great...

LOVE that board man!!! Every pedal is awesome. How do you like the El Capistan and how are you using it?? I saw a demo on it and what it was really all about and it made me want to try one just for the sound it can get. That old tape machine sound. Are you using it as a preamp of sorts??

Also, the MT sounds like it may be something I'd like to try. I like the tighter low end and high end emphasis you speak of. I probably won't get one. But I'd like to try one with my setup.

Thanks dude!

The El Cap is definitely a top notch tape delay - lots of controls over the parameters to fine-tune the character of the tape/delay sounds. i.e. Things like tape crinkle, low/high pass, wow & flutter. Having said that, I just got a Walrus ARP-87, and that one may end up on the board. It's smaller, has digital & tape, and it can do slap back just for fattening things up. The tape delay on the ARP can't compete with the El Cap, but I was using the El Cap for cleanish tape sounds anyway.

On the MT, it's a subtle difference. Aside from the deeper vs tighter lows that I'm hearing between the two - you probably wouldn't notice in a mix. I just figured between the two I would use the slightly tighter lows of the MT on my big board since the Civil Unrest already has good lows, and I don't want to overpower the mids of my Cattail. I also stack the Cattail into my MBD-2 for chunkier stuff, so that adds lows anyway...

You mean you thought the MT was fatter down low with more roll off in the highs?

I thought the MT was a little more wooly on the low end and the V1 tighter and a little more clear. Same roll off on the highs on both though.

Yeah that's interesting. I'll most likely just stick with my Bloop and MBD1. As much as I love Damnation and all the stuff he builds, I'm still very happy with my Bloop and MBD1. Maybe if I win some money!!! :jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

Can’t believe I slept on this for so long. IDGAF that it’s comically oversized, it sounds amazing through headphones so far, bet it’ll slay through my amp.

To my ears, the v1 is a lot like using the MBD's Clean. The MT seems to have a similar effect as when using the MBD's Clean and Depth together to tighten and thicken the lows, but not as drastic... I use the MT w/pedals that don't necessarily hate buffers but respond differently to active vs passive signals at high gain levels, and as Evil_Druid described it, the MT's lows stay more defined with faster runs and more complex stuff

I'm gonna have to give it another run fellas because I didn't find a similar experience.

The description of the MT says something about bigger lows than V1 but I didn't get any inkling of tighter more defined lows from the product description or my experience.

I sold my V1 to buy the MT so I can't AB them but I used the V1 for over a year or so I remember it pretty well.

We’re also trying to describe sound with words - a tough call...

When I turn up the depth on my MBD I hear more lows, but they sound more broad/wider. More open if that makes sense. To my ears the lows on the Bloop are a bit bigger and more open, and the MT sounds a bit more punchy, defined, articulate. Both of them are certainly noticeable in terms of adding back a bunch of punch and balls and fundamental, especially once you hit noon or so. It’s very apparent.

Again, I did a quick back and forth switching the same fuzz between the two with my jazz bass. So maybe I’m just hearing it different. Either way, it’s not a drastic difference. If I owned one and tested the other, I wouldn’t be scrambling to flip the one I have. I just wanted to try it and can use one on both boards, so it was a luxury purchase.

Anyway, I tagged him earlier in the thread, but curious if @father of fires can chime in and hip us to what’s happening with each of them. Maybe we’re all crazy...

ETA: I think I already asked him to explain when they came out and it went over my head. If that’s the case, sorry dude! I think it’s time for a beer now.

I agree with Grahams Groove that maybe the descriptions are being confused. I'm taking into account how a pedal that doesn't respond well to buffers sounded with the v1, and, how the same pedal now sounds with the MT. Before it didn't sound right but it does now. So I'm probably perceiving that as more being defined or focused while being thicker. Either way, my pedals do benefit from the MT not having a buffer and I like it!
