Damnation Audio Fan/Appreciation Thread

Not sure what's actually happening but there currently is a thread in a Facebook Bass pedal group where there are some dudes claiming that the MBD sounds like Darkglass products. Personally I find that concept to be constructed of pure insanity. Yeah, Doug makes great stuff, I ain't bashing DG at all. But they're saying stuff like: "...honestly I find the MBD-2 to be similar to Darkglass, particularly the Alpha Omega, without the baked in Darkglass EQ curve...." which negates itself. He's basically saying: it sounds like it, but it doesn't sound like it".
I personally think this is an insane concept, the products are completely different.
Or am I the one that's crazy?

Someone should inform them of the simple fact that the MBD came out before Darkglass presented the AO at NAMM 2017.

P.S.
In case I jumped to the wrong conclusion on what implication there is with it sounding like a Darkglass... having owned both, I'd say that the MBD and the AO aren't very dissimilar, but that I like the MBD's characteristics a tad better when ignoring the baked in DG EQ, and like the MBD a lot better when not.

Distortion wars... (they all sort of sound but not actually sound at all like Darkglass ;)) thank goodness.

Recently picked up the MDB2. As mentioned before the biggest thing I found with this pedal is how incredible it is at the end of the chain as it does something to make everything sound better. I have also found that it really boosts the harmonics as well which is awesome. My biggest issue is that the distortion sounds awesome on its own. I could totally run two. My signal is DG ADAM, Kinnatone Rat, DG Omicron, MBD2, EQ2 then Demeter vtb201s. The rat is always on low the adam does comp, initial eq, some dirt. The MDB and the rat are a match made in heaven!!

Saw that thread, too. I already typed down a lengthy response and then figured “naaaaaa” and closed the window.

I figure DG has become sort of the go-to pseudo-standard for modern bass distortion by now. Hence people compare everything to it. I’ve seen people compare the Orange Bass Butler to DG products, or the Ampeg SCR-DI, or Pork&Pickle etc.. It’s just what it is at the moment methinks. Like people who compare any bass with one pickup to a Fender P, no matter whether said bass has a completely different neck, PU position, or active electronics. Or how everything tastes like chicken if you’re hellbent on comparing it to chicken.

I left all the FB pedal groups. It’s even more annoying than here.

Hi gang,

Big fan of TS styled OD, I love the fuzzy-creamy distortion style it gives (not fizzy!)
I've been using a Xotic BB preamp (I know it's a kind of Marshallish TS, yes) for years with rather good results but lately I've been wanting to have a bit more of "body" in my sound while having the same creamy distortion going on. I've tried several "regular" blend pedals but I've been disappointed so far with the results.

Enter Damnation and it's "faux-Clean" blend and there acclaimed lowend retention.
I was wondering if the MBD2 or the D2 would be a similar flavour or if I should look elsewhere?
There is also the option of going Bloop but I would rather avoid having a thirteenth pedal on my already crowded board.

Curmudgeon doesn't have a clean blend but the MBD2 would likely work really well for you based on your listed preferences. Its going to have a lot more bass than the pedals you mention even without the blend. Bloop is a good tool to have in general and could likely simplify your dirt options if you have a lot of dirt pedals on your board.
