I experimented with a few different paths. I was wanting to run an octaver and some distortion thru the loop. But i settled on just looping the distortion and going out to the filter and modulation. It seems that’s just where it’s most effective. Though I also only have bass pedals or pedals with low frequency ability. So the pedals were already bass friendly. The fixer does add some nice oomph to the dirt though. I didn’t want it on the filters specifically and I have that before the modulation. However I thought it added something on my chorus.

New band released a "single"?? about a month ago.
Recording chain is Spector Euro 4>empress comp>MBD2>Gate>BDDI(for more beef)>GK legacy 800 (DI out post EQ to DAW, no cab or cab sim)
Took forever to figure out a rig for this band. I haven't played music like this since i was a younger lad. My older setups from pervious bands weren't cutting it. this is the first time I've stacked pedals to get what i was trying to achieve.

I've had an MBD v3 for a couple of months now, but I'm finding it difficult to use with the band. Mainly because it constantly adds a lot of bass, even with the Depth and Boost at their lowest settings. The clean mix also adds a lot of bass on its own.

I use a DCX bass before it, and the difference in bass is very noticeable when switching the MBD on and off. I don't think the DCX is lacking in bass. Is this just how the MBD works? It sounds a bit muddy unless I drastically EQ everything else to match the MBD.

* I use a Stingray through a variety of amps

Try the following:
  • turning the clean Blend CCW
  • turning the Depth CCW
  • turning the Volume control CW
  • setting the Tone control above noon
  • inserting high pass filter in your signal chain after the MBD
The key is to understand that the clean blend is lowpassed. It means it's mostly low frequencies. Mids and highs are attenuated. See the post No. 5889 in this thread.

I was doing some measurements for a prototype and decided to toss an MBD in the mix for fun. As requested 100 times. Here's what the contoured clean blend looks like on a scope.

The way I set my MBD is the following:
  1. I start with the Drive control at noon, Depth low (around 8 oclock), Boost disengaged, Tone at 1 o'clock
  2. I set the Volume CCW-so the distortion channel is effectively muted
  3. I set the Clean/Blend at unity with lows of the bypassed signal (or slightly below unity) - remember - as the clean channel is low frequencies only, you need to compare only the lows, at unity it will sound quieter because of the missing mids/highs
  4. I bring up the distortion channel by setting the Volume control around noon
  5. I set the intensity of distortion by adjusting the Drive control
  6. I do the fine tuning with Volume, Depth and Tone controls
Controls on my pedal usualy end up like this: Clean Blend around 1-3 o'clock, Tone around 2 o'clock, Drive noon or slightly above, Boost at 7 o'clock, Depth 9 o'clock or below.

You can go about it the other way round:
  1. Start with clean Blend CCW (muted), Tone at noon
  2. Use Volume and Drive controls to set your distortion sound
  3. Make sure that your distortion sound is at unity level with bypassed sound
  4. Start bringing up the clean Blend
  5. As your sound becomes too lows heavy, make room for the lows by turning the Tone control CW.

I had the same experience with MBD2. Even though I had depth at zero (with not a lot of clean added either), it pumped up my low end. I found it to be quite mid scooped too, so it sounded best to me as a full on distortion where I didn't mind it fattening up my low end and being a bit "muff like".

Start with volume and tone maxed, depth at noon and everything else on zero, this is essentially "flat" with a slight dip at 250Hz and a slight roll off in the highs and deep lows. Add gain until you get the amount of bite you want and then boost or cut depth to get the weight you want. Only add "clean" if you feel a hole in your bottom end. Lower tone to adjust for a brighter rig. Set volume to taste after everything else is where you want it.

The MBD doesn't cut lows in most settings but you can boost mids and highs by cutting depth and boosting gain which is essentially the same thing.

Edited to add:

This is my set up at a recent jam. I started like I mentioned above and ended here. Playing a P Bass tuned to C into a Hartke 5500 and 2 ea. Ampeg 115E cabs. The amp just had the low and high boosted a bit. It sounded nice and full.

What confuses me is the part about maxed Tone control. My understanding is that the Tone is tilt control centered at 600Hz.

It's my understanding that maxing it (CW) would boost frequencies above 600hz and attenuate frequencies below 600Hz. Do I get it right or wrong?
