Danelectro Owners Club

Looks like Jerry Jones just copied Danos, but with higher-grade parts, and at very much higher prices. Anyway, his business seems to be over, the factory closed, and no instruments available.

The Gbase one is tempting, but $125 for shipping, then nearly 23% taxes...I think I'll pass. On the other hand, buying one in the UK, then getting a luthier to do the work, will cost more. Hmm.

A few months ago I found one of these at the local GC for a really good price. I don't know what year it was made, 1990's perhaps? It already had flatwound strings one it, not sure what brand... The only issue it had was that the neck pickup was a lot quieter than the bridge pickup... It needed to be raised, but adjusting the screws did nothing because the foam underneath was all dried out and compressed. I had to remove the pickup and put in some new foam in order to make the pickup able to be raised via screw adjustment. It worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I pretty much haven't been playing any bass for the past year or so, so it just sits there with my other bases, all sad and unused...

I can narrow it down even further - 1998-2000 was when those were made.

I'm not sure where to find neck screws for my DanoPro bass project. Does anyone know of a source? I'd like to use danelectro-type screws, which have a larger head than the normal pan head screws you find at the hardware store. There are some on the $bay, but the ones that are there now are either rusty, or in sets of 3, or too expensive, or all three. I want 4 clean ones. They don't need to be vintage.

To the best of my knowledge FortMadisonGuitars.com is THE source for Danno parts. Had a nice 30 minute phone conversation with the owner several months ago, he told me they had bought out all of the parts business from Danelectro and is/was trying to buy the company outright. I'd start there.

Exactly - he recognized the validity of the design and just "boutiqued" them - handmade by skilled laborers, better wood, good hardware.
As such he's well beloved in the Dano community because he helped to make them "legitmate" - and of course, he helped to crate the demand that lead to Evetts producing the relatively accurate Danlelectro reissues that represent the majority of entries in this thread.

Hello Rumour Bass owners!

How are those constructed? Specifically, are they hollow like the conventional danos?
If not, are they "solid" wood or plywood?
Also, how do their pickups compare to a conventional P pickup?
Thanks, I had to part with my pbass recently, and it seems like this would be ideal for me as its both a p and a dano and they come in the vintage dano style sparkle finishes I wish they made their other stuff available in. (In fact, I'd forgotten these came in that finish and had recently suggested they do that on this forum).

Thanks.

Also - if you are in the GTA and have one to part with, let me know.
Bump... anyone help me out on the Rumour?

Yes he did ...very, very well! I wish I hadn't sold the JJ I had for a while. Very nice-playing instruments, now becoming very expensive since there won't be any more.

I know it's a niche, but I think there'd be room for someone to successfully pick up Jerry's torch and produce custom Dano-style intstruments.

Moon-something guitars (Moondog? Moondawg?) did a batch of danelectro-y baritones last year. I think he's posted to this group. Maybe he'll chime in.

I'd love to do something like that.

Right off I want to thank you guys for keeping me from getting the big head... Just about the time I start thinking I've finally made some progress in getting my name out, I get on talkbass and go to one of my favorite threads and Wham!... Back to reality. :D:D:D

I also have a out of date website (moonshineguitars.com)

I am a huge fan of both Nate Daniel (a true genius) and Jerry Jones. Jerry built some incredible instruments and I have always admired how he found a perfect niche in the guitar industry; he filled a void that may not of been huge but still he found a market for his builds. Not an easy task. I think the reissue Dano's are really nice instruments and a hell of a deal for what they sell for. I don't currently own one but I have owned several in the past. Cool basses.

Has anyone ever come across, or created, a fretless Dano? I'm tempted to buy another, and get a luthier to remove the frets, insert lines.

Last December I built an unlined fretless neck for a Tb member for his Silvertone bass (not sure what model, I only saw a photo of the body). I had thought about doing one before but never had. I completed a batch of necks at the beginning of summer (I had knee replacement surgery, one knee in July and the other in Aug. This week was my first week back in the shop... part time for now) and one of the necks was a lined fretless. I am working on a acoustic/electric Longhorn that has a slightly thicker Spanish cedar body and a spruce top. It will have at least one piezo pickup and most likely an acoustic style bridge. It will be an interesting bass.

In all seriousness, I love building these things, they are such a cool design, I build all wood (same design, but using more standard instrument woods) versions of these instruments but tone wise, a lot of the time I find that I prefer the Masonite builds.

In addition to the more standard models, I do offer Baritones (Bass VI), 8 strings (doubled octaves) and double necks.

I'm sure there are others building Dano styles too.

Thanks for mentioning me,
Moondawg... uh, I mean Moonshine ;)

FOUR knee replacements?? Holy crap! I'm going in for my first (right knee) on Oct. 5th. Hopefuly the first and last one. This getting old crap ain't for the faint of heart eh? Don't be fooled by my avatar photo, that's from 1976.

Yeah. I had 2 done in 2004 - must have overworked them, replaced in '11 & '14. The new ones seem solid. May you stop at 1! Sorry for the derail, though I bet there's a big overlap between Dano lovers and knee replacement patients ;)

Sigh.

Getting things not-quite-right can sure get a conversation going. :bassist:
