Danelectro Owners Club

Looks very similar to my Sonic Blue CV Squier 60's P bass. Maybe its closer to that than seafoam.

I'm not sure how I'm going to paint it. Still thinking.

I think it is seafoam green. I don't have easy access to a nice sprayer, but maybe i know a guy. I don't know where I can find the color. I haven't actually even started looking. Rattle can? Might be impossible to find this color in a can, and the result might not be pretty enough.

I hope it sounds as nice to my ears as it sounds to my eyes.

The tape is just to figure out where the pick guard is going to fall.
I've wanted to do this very project for years - the pro shape has always been my favourite Dano shape.
Note:
Make sure you measure for the bridge position.
A longhorn neck will drop in to a DC, but the Pro was short scale guitar so the spacing may not be the same. (I'm assuming you've thought of this since you have gone so far as to re0route the neck pocket, but I'd hate to see you end up with a non-functional bass).
You should be able to get a pretty good match in a can - that is a pretty popular colour on cars of a certain age and pickup trucks for about three decades.

Today I was re-checking that I'd cut the neck pocket right, re-checking that I have all the parts I need, thinking about what controls I want.

The neck pocket is OK. Maybe it could stand to be another 1/8" closer to the bridge, but it'll do. It'll intonate fine where it is now.

I need the "right" neck screws. Danelectro necks are attached with panhead screws. I have oval-heads & grommets, which would work, but wouldn't look Danelectro. And they wouldn't match the other screws that live on the back (and front) of the body, which are all panhead.

I bought a pair of lipstick pickups. I don't recall which is meant to be the bridge pickup, and which wire is supposed to be which. One is blue/white/bare; the other is red/white/bare. I'll have to figure that out.

But otherwise I'm in pretty good shape. The biggest thing is figuring out what I'm going to do to refinish the body.

The shiny bridge is a Jerry Jones. The dull one is a (collapsed) Danelectro from my 56, which also now has a Jerry Jones bridge. The Danelectro bridge's string spacing is better (a tad narrower), but the Jerry Jones ones don't collapse (and they're prettier, of

course).

Very cool project!

The bare wire should be the ground for the shielding (the tube) - then white would be ground for each pickup.
Logic would say red would be the bridge - but throwing an ohmmeter on will tell you which one is hotter.

Hi. My first post on the forum, and it's to join the Dano Club...I received my "Dead On 58" in the post today, about four hours ago, and have hardly stopped playing it since. I'm putting it through a Phil Jones Double 4, and enjoying getting to know a bass again after an absence of a few years - I thought it would be a cheap and fun way back in.

Pros: great fun, short scale (although I have big hands, I like the short scale), cool vibe/retro look, easy-playing neck/fingerboard
Cons: the tone controls hardly register a change

I've been jamming with backing tracks on YouTube, everything from BB King to Cream and Aretha Franklin, some jazz walking as well, especially Miles's So What. I'm aiming for an old-fashioned thump, with some double-bass tones. I'm mainly using my RH thumb up around the 16th fret area.

I bought Thomastik-Infeld flats, the short-scale set, JF324, but haven't put them on yet. Since buying them two days ago, someone told me they will be too thick for the Dano tuners - is that correct? They are expensive strings, so I'd like to return them unopened, in the hope of getting a swap for something more suitable. Any advice?

If it's a long scale set, then yes, he E won't fit. You either need to drill it the E's hole a tad, it get a short-scale set.

My Jerry Jones doesn't have a tone control. I don't miss it. But I never touch my tone in my basses that do have it, so your mileage may vary from mine.

IMHO, It kinda depends on how light or heavy your playing style is. Short scale basses have less tension than their long scale brethren, resulting in what players with a heavier playing style often refer to as "rubber band strings".

My experience has been that I typically want heavier gauge strings on a short scale. My Longhorn currently sports D'addario Chromes, which have a .100" E string (it fits through the stock tuners just fine), and it's about as light a gauge set as I want on a short scale bass.

Point is, if you use a light touch then you can probably get by with the .039"-.096" La Bellas but personally I would want a heavier gauge set. YMMV.

Thank you for the comment! After a lot of dithering and more reading around I decided to go for the D'Addario Chromes. The Rotosound Rep was in the shop when I was ordering them and he nearly swayed me, telling me that the Rotosound flats are handmade by just one guy so I had better order some quick in case he goes off sick :)

Next on my list I am researching a second hand amp. My little Roland Bass Cube couldn't compete with the guitars at our first gig so the sound guy nicked my mic to put the bass through the PA. That rather drowned out the guitars, although I think that might have been his plan!

Thanks again!

BTW, lovin' that black Longhorn

Me too! :)

I've never had a problem with the .100 D'Addario E strings - both Chromes and half-rounds. The ends fit fine through the posts and I don't think they'd been drilled out before I got there.

The only issue recently was with the winding not fitting through the stick bridge, but a few snips with some sewing scissors took care of that. Note that this never happened on my adjustable bridge; maybe this style has wider holes.

(Not sure if the Quote thing worked there) Thank you for the info! I decided to go for the Chromes in the end!

Hello Rumour Bass owners!

How are those constructed? Specifically, are they hollow like the conventional danos?
If not, are they "solid" wood or plywood?
Also, how do their pickups compare to a conventional P pickup?
Thanks, I had to part with my pbass recently, and it seems like this would be ideal for me as its both a p and a dano and they come in the vintage dano style sparkle finishes I wish they made their other stuff available in. (In fact, I'd forgotten these came in that finish and had recently suggested they do that on this forum).

Thanks.

Also - if you are in the GTA and have one to part with, let me know.

I ended up with LaBella DTF Lights on the LH, sound really good and fit fine through the tuner peg holes.

A few months ago I found one of these at the local GC for a really good price. I don't know what year it was made, 1990's perhaps? It already had flatwound strings one it, not sure what brand... The only issue it had was that the neck pickup was a lot quieter than the bridge pickup... It needed to be raised, but adjusting the screws did nothing because the foam underneath was all dried out and compressed. I had to remove the pickup and put in some new foam in order to make the pickup able to be raised via screw adjustment. It worked perfectly. Unfortunately, I pretty much haven't been playing any bass for the past year or so, so it just sits there with my other bases, all sad and unused...

Nice. Nice color.

With those tuners and knobs, it is '90s, I think. I guess they were made up until 2001 or so?

I'm not sure where to find neck screws for my DanoPro bass project. Does anyone know of a source?

I'd like to use danelectro-type screws, which have a larger head than the normal pan head screws you find at the hardware store.

There are some on the $bay, but the ones that are there now are either rusty, or in sets of 3, or too expensive, or all three. I want 4 clean ones. They don't need to be vintage.
