OK, Dano dudes, I'm being offered Wild Thing baritone in trade. They seem to be pretty rare, so i can't even come up with comps to determine a value. What would you value one (red, Korean, VG condition) at in trade value?

Depends on if you actually want it. If you do, they're worth $350 ish. If you intend to flip it, less. 'Cause as much love as we give em here, Danos aren't super popular and that's a less popular one, so you'll be waiting a while potentially.

Yep Black Diamonds we’re everywhere and the first roundwounds I ever met - mid 60’s. ...ahead of their time :). I recall that they turned your fingers black and we’re pretty twangy. ...but they were also cheap.

And all the Silvertone 1444 basses at my local Sears were loaded with them. Years ahead of Rotos for roundwound.

Yeah; in the U.S.A., but J. E. wasn't so lucky. The crazy thing was that I could buy those strings from my local mom 'n' pop pharmacy. And my sporting goods from the hardware store.
Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant buy the whole new longhorn to replace the one with abdomen string.
Anyhoo... Aren't black diamond still around? They were when I had a store (that was 20 years ago now,but well past the glory days of black diamond strings).

You're right; I had a light-bulb moment as to your actual meaning, but by then I'd already posted. Apologies tendered.

Today's Black Diamond strings are connected to the originals in name only. Somebody bought the rights to the name. Lots of examples of this, one of the earliest and most notable being Washburn, who cleverly tried to mask the lack of continuity in their print advertisements in the 1970s.

I'm about to change the bridge on my homebuilt Dano Pro bass. I built it with a new Dano aftermarket replacement popsicle stick bridge. I assumed it would be made of good metal, but it wasn't. It sagged [insert sad trombone sound effect].

So I decided to do the same thing I did on my '11 56 bass when the same thing happened: replace it with a Jerry Jones popsicle stick bridge.

Someone suggested a Zamm, so I also got one of those. One (slight) problem with the JJ bridges I've had my hands on is that the string spacing is a little wider. It's not so much wider that it's a problem, but I wondered if the Zamm' s spacing would match Danelectro, or Jerry Jones.

It turns out that Zamm spacing is the same as Jerry Jones -- at least for the ones I have. Pictures above...
1. Jerry Jones top, '11 Danelectro 56 bridge (matte finish) bottom.
2. Jerry Jones top, Zamm bottom (their own unique popsicle stick shape!): spacing is the same
3. Zamm on top of Danelectro bridge that's on the Dano Pro
4. 56 bass with Jerry Jones bridge, showing how the wider string spacing sits on the neck

I have used my Longhorn alot since end of last year, initially with some concerns, but later again with the usual confidence and joy.
The reason for concern? Change of strings!
After great results with D'Addario XLs (rounds) I was curious enough to install a set of Pyramid rounds last year, specifically intended for Danelectro ( as the package says). And "Made in Germany", too.
Not a smart move. Rough on my fingers, and with a highly inconsistent string-to-string AND fret-to-fret tone and sustain.
Suddenly there were plenty of dead spots and general loss of balls.

I suspected my memory of this (backup-ish) bass had been a bit too rose colored, but with a fresh set of XLs instead of German barb wire, she is now singing and thumping great again!

Even the drummer commented how articulate and thick the bass sounds. Life is good!

Where do I signup to join the Dano group. I have 2 3412 short horns a 1964 and what I believe is a 61 still getting parts for that one also have a 59 silver MIK , Starting to build a 59 from parts and going to build a 56 custom impossible to locate a 24 fret short scale neck. I am thinking of using humbucker lipstick for the pups any body tried them out. Just want to let you guys know I do not play bass just like to build and repair. What pickups have you found work best?
