Darkglass alpha omega ultra

I’ve always liked the idea of the Darkglass pedals, but I never use the typical djent tone you hear in almost all the videos. This pedal seems like it can do more “mainstream” (for lack of a better term) tones. I just want to fatten up the tone a bit.
I can guarantee it works beautifully for that. I don't use extreme distortion, either, and it's very easy to get fat, yet gritty tones.

Start with just the clean EQ and dial in your tone. Then blend in distortion as needed. On top of that, use the Darkglass suite to find the best IR for your tone.

Thanks! You mean you can play Darkglass without a detuned Dingwall?? Heh. There was a video on YouTube with a Fender Jazz and a non distorted 7K tone that sounded good, but I can’t find it. Appreciate the feedback!

While the Alpha-Omega can certainly help, for what you are looking for the Vintage Microtubes might be more helpful in the long-run.

Well... I do play a Dingwall. It's a Super P5, however. Standard tuning. ;)

I considered the Vintage Microtubes and B7K, but I found the EQ too fiddly for my tastes with the dip switches. I prefer the EQ on the AOU.

The kind of music I play is progressive poprock.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Hey did you get yours yet @andrew?? Looking forward to hearing your review.

My A/OU arrived right before I had to go to a practice this week so I threw it into my signal chain for the night. This meant I didn't get to play through it as much as I'd liked but did get to run it both in the band mix and solo right away.

I normally use a Spector for this band but for giggles I used a Schecter dUg Pinnick signature bass instead. The Schecter doesn't have an active preamp so to get it more into the Spector's hyper-active bass tone range I added a B7KU to my chain and ran it clean into the A/OU. This chain all went into the Tech 21 dUg Ultra 1000 amp head into a LowDownSound 215 loaded with Faital speakers.

In short, the A/OU is so, so, so good. I own and like both the A/O and A/Omicron too but the A/OU takes what those pedals can do so much further. The graphic on the A/OU is a game changer for dialling in the perfect distortion tone.
This combo of gear sounds MASSIVE. @gregmon79 you will dig this pedal. Of course the A/OU is not extremely different than the A/O, they're both built from the same base tone, but the Ultra's feature changes over the original A/O are significant enough to really up it's versatility. I'll comment more when I've had a chance to experiment with it using other basses and into other amps too, but I have to say my initial experience with the A/OU (post NAMM) was excellent. Really rad distortion pedal.

I didn’t need enforcement or an excuse to get one. I was planning on it anyway. But I’ll take this as an affirmation anyhow ;)

The AO line was the closest I’ve come to keeping a DG pedal, if that counts for anything LOL. I still kinda want an ultra but I must resist at least 7ntil my Annex Bass drive gets here.

I really like my AOm... still trying to decide if I sell it for the AOU, I like the idea of the EQ especially after my wife put my Empress Para EQ on her board, leaving me without an EQ or pre-amp with an EQ.

Recently picked up an AOU, and very happy with it! (I sold my AOm, as I wanted the eq capability). My preference atm is AOU>MBD-1 (vs after)...

I still need to spend some time sorting out the cab sim scenarios between my OCSD and AOU...but the AOU was a good move, even without the cab sim...

The hole in my board—my Fuzzrocious Grey Stache is currently back at the shop for a clean blend control add/mod...

Darn, all its features look so tempting. Can it do more classic overdrive-y things or does it always sound modern and distorted?

Mine the original AO from way back - less than a year ago...
Anyway you can dial the blend back so the distortion is not as prevalent but the distortion sound is defiantly modern. My suggestion is to look elsewhere if you are looking for a subtle tube like distortion.

Stacking question in the AOU - would you run the B7K before or after? I thought VMT-AOU-B7KU, as the B7K has more scoop, but the AO is heavier distortion. Hmmm.

Never owned a B7K but might soon?
Anyway i own a rusty box i use from time to time and it has changed the way I use some pedals.
If my intent is for the pedal (like the rusty box for example) is to use it as my amps preamp - or always on tone - i place it last in the chain before hitting the amps effects return or input.
Until if find a way I like the sound of more - then this means nothing...

DG, to me, never sounds like classic overdrive or distortion. It has it's own modern thing to it, especially the AO line of pedals. This is no slight to the AO line, I happen to love the way it sounds.
