Darkglass Vintage Deluxe!

Finally got one and had the chance to gig with it on the weekend. Definitely happy with it. Don't know that I needed the EQ section, as I was already quite happy with the standard VMT, but having the DI out is a bonus.

I feel essentially the same way. I don't really plan on using the DI, but I wanted the three-band EQ. Honestly though, I'm not sure if I'll end up even using the EQ all that much...but it's nice to have it there, I suppose. :)

I am currently running a VMT into an Aguilar Tonehammer pedal and while I love the tone and versatility, I'm wondering if I might not be better off with a Vintage Deluxe? Any thoughts on this maybe from someone who has tried my setup? The only thing I'm thinking I might miss is the sweepable mids on the TH.

I haven't tried your current setup, but I replaced my Tonehammer with the VMT Deluxe. I've been still holding onto the Tonehammer just in case I found that I needed the sweepable mids, as that was largely my concern as well. My other concern was the bass EQ point on the Vintage Deluxe - it's at 100Hz instead of 40Hz on the Tonehammer.

While I don't know how agressively you use the sweepable mid control on your Tonehammer, I can tell you that I haven't missed mine at all. I think the higher EQ point on the bass control of the Deluxe is much more useable (you can actually turn it up without getting boomy) and can add the warmth that you may generally try to add with a low-mid EQ. There are a couple things I'll point out about my usage, however. 1 - I only play 4-string basses...so perhaps with a 5-string someone may want a lower bass EQ point. 2 - I love the tone of my primary two basses when they're flat...so I'm doing very minor adjustments and tweaking, and not trying to get a fundamentally different sound with the EQ.

Hope that helps.

I'm curious guys, on a VMT pedal, isn't the era knob a sweeping mid tone control? If so, surely it's not needed on a VMT deluxe which also has B/M/T controls?

Hey! Not really, the ERA changes the voicing and character of the pedal... dimmed it will bump up the mids and cut treble, giving a very vintage, dark woolly tone. When you crank it up the higher mids get bumped up and the voicing gets more aggressive and punchy.

Hope this helps!

So it's an EQ right?
It's "an EQ" in that it affects the output spectrum.
But rather than affecting only the amplitude of a specific portion of the spectrum, it's affecting the complete shape of the spectrum. It's kind of like a parametric EQ except that bandwidth, frequency center, and amplitude are all affected by a single knob in a preset fashion.
So less an EQ than a shape control.
Bandwidth, freq center, and amplitude are all affected in a predefined curve that approximately models how amp voicing changed through the years.
It's -a little- like the ToneHammer 'Drive' control, which is also a shape control.

Getting this fired back up!!!! Show some love for the VMTD folks! I just traded my B7K for one and couldn't be happier!!

Anyone have clips? :woot:

Still happy with mine, although kinda just wishing I'd hung onto my standard VMT instead of upgrading. I don't use the EQ much, and I've only used the DI the one time. That one time it was great - I used the pedal as an amp emulator and went straight into the desk, but now it's just a big pedal taking up more room than I need it too. May look at trading back for the standard in the future.

OK... TB Darkglass fans... I'm in Singapore right now and there is a shop with a VMT Deluxe for about $50 less than I can buy it for in the US (exchange rate helps me here). However, the pedal is made in Finland, not USA. Are these more desirable? I can always buy a US made when when I return next week, but they will run me more $.... what would you do?

Actually unless you get it second hand you'll be getting a Finnish one in the US as well!

Production was moved back to Finland a bit over a year ago.
The newer Finnish versions are by far the best pedals we've ever made. A ton of improvements on construction make them not just better looking but also more way more reliable.

I've been using the special edition VMTD for a minute now and definitely has become an essential part of my kit. Is it true you built these yourself Douglas?

Thanks man! Yeah that was the first batch since the switch back to Finland - I had to take a week off before my wedding to build them haha.
