Hello I'm Sigi from Germany,
I just bought my fourth Dean Bass and like to know what model it is. I can't find anything about it in internet without more Information's. As the seller tell, it is a shortscale Bass with neck-through neck and active 3-band eq. I hope, somebody could help me. Thanks and best regards, Sigi

Yeah dude, its definitely not your average narrow and thin Dean bass neck.

The Lawhon is on the right in the bottom pic.
You can easily see its wider and thicker.
The only other Dean with a thick neck that I have is the Demonator, it's actually pretty damn chunky, but still narrow like a Jazz.
The Lawhon measures at about 40 or 41mm at the nut (I think the specs say 1.65 inches) and the Eric Bass is around 37mm. My BC Richs are around 42mm like a Pbass so the Lawhon is a touch narrower than a P.

I wonder why the string tree is in a totally different place on each one? The one thing I will say about the Eric bass ome is the string tree appears to be way too close to the nut causing this crazy downward angle, I think the tree placement on the Lawhon is much better. The volute is in 2 totally different places too, the one on the Eric Bass is much lower and more substantial. I guess that's just down to construction differences in China and Korea. I will give the nod to Korea everyday on that one.
Looks more like the Paramount neck profile than the other Hillsboro’s?

Though admittedly none of them are the same

Thanks for your quick help. The Dean Razor will arrive the next days. So in the moment i don't know how it sounds. What about the Dean Session pu's and the 3D eq? Is it right that the pu's are active? Where are these basses built (Korea?)? I hope the quality is like my other Dean Basses. Best regards, Sigi

Yes!!! Lol. I actually had it in about 2 days! I wanted to spend some time With it and put it through its paces before I put up a review, As well as do a bit of a deeper dive comparison with the Eric Bass signature Hillsboro.
So...........
It's a great bass! Lol
Once I adjusted the truss rod a smidge and lowered the strings a little, it played with nice low action and minimal fret buzz.
It definitely has a different neck profile than any of my other 4 Dean's. The width at the nut is between a Jazz and P bass neck, More like my BC Riches. I like it.
The sound is considerably more gritty and midrangy old school than the Eric Bass. I like The simplicity of only having an active pickup with passive volume and tone controls, though has the HOTTEST output of any bass I've ever played! If I don't back off of the volume about a 3rd of the way it totally distorts like I'm hitting my bass overdrive pedal! But once you do that it sounds fantastic.
Fit and finish is excellent, I couldn't find any paint flaws and the fretwork is just fine. No sharp edges. Plus I absolutely love the sea foam green color!!
Over all it absolutely holds up to any bass in the 500 to 800 dollar range. At 299 it a total no brainer. ProAudioStar may still Be blowing them out at that price.
Now, onto the Eric Bass signature.
Wow.
What a shagging bass!!!
All I can say is

im tempted to get one of this for that price to go with my Eric bass. I’ve redone all the electronics in my Eric bass with Nordstrand big blades, but a passive MM bass like the Jon Lawhon is appealing. And I love Black Stone cherry!

Made in South Korea.
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed .

@2many and @Bass Man Stan should be able to fill you in. I have the active Standard model which is bolt-on

You were supposed to say ‘who do these guys think they’re kidding?
Not even close to the real deal Custom Zone...tsk, tsk.’

Pups are passive, but connected to active preamp.

It is a great looking combination. The trans blue version seems to be the most common. Looks to be a 2010 model (1st year of production) based on the rounded FB end. Glad someone here bought it. I have the trans black from same year. I’ve had good luck with MGR. I hope you do too!

I got my Eric Bass Hilly from a MGR for 299 and it arrived very well packed (unlike Guitar Centers ATROCIOUS packing methods) and looked brand new from the factory and was setup beautifully.

So you didn't like the stock Pickup and preamp in the EB Hilly? I think it is fantastic sounding!! How would you characterize your EB? Honestly, I think mine feels and plays like an American made Fender Jazz or Stingray. I've never spent so little for a bass that punches this much above its weight class! It has almost the EXACT specs of the $800 Hillsboro select basses they just came out with. Same wood. Same bridge. Same pickup. Cheaper finish! For 300 more than the EBs sold for! (I think they were around 500 dollars street)
And dude, pull the trigger on that Lawhon for 299!!! They are still $500 everywhere else but pro audio star. I dig the different neck profile it has then all of my other Dean basses and the active pickup with passive vol and tone is a TOTALLY different sound. Much more gritty and sorta Pbass sounding than my others with CRAZY high output. I have to leave the volume at around halfway or it starts to Overdrive the amplifier!!
Plus......the color is frigging awesome!

Dude......I WANT ONE! That's gorgeous man!
I LOVE neck thru body instruments, my first 2 basses were a Gibson Thunderbird and BC Rich Mockingbird, both Thru necks, and I think that ruined me!!! I think I have 19 neck thrus now so these are right up my alley.
I imagine Razors are pretty rare, nice score.

Has anyone here ever tried one of these?

Screenshot_20200814-175526_Chrome.jpg

I love the look of it, and that engraving on the back of the neck to reduce surface area and therefore friction looks very interesting.
Edit.... I see that this bass doesn't have that on the back of the neck, But I would still love to hear if anyone has Checked these out

I’ve curious about them. The back of the neck checkering feature is a very innovative idea and so is the thumb rest built into the body. However, this is Dean Zelinsky doing something that isn’t part of the company that bought the use of his brand and brought Dean Guitars and Basses back from certain extinction in the USA. No one in this club has one. I posted a pic as a separate thread for all TB-ers to respond to. No one owned one. I was very surprised.

Maybe now someone does own one?

There’s a Razor NT for sale on Reverb now. I believe it’s in England or Scotland. Too high in price for me. They pop up once in a while on MGR & GC. @ElBecko59 bought one from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton MGR store.
Apparently his had some neck issues causing fret buzz if I recall correctly.
