Dean Club!!!

So you didn't like the stock Pickup and preamp in the EB Hilly? I think it is fantastic sounding!! How would you characterize your EB? Honestly, I think mine feels and plays like an American made Fender Jazz or Stingray. I've never spent so little for a bass that punches this much above its weight class! It has almost the EXACT specs of the $800 Hillsboro select basses they just came out with. Same wood. Same bridge. Same pickup. Cheaper finish! For 300 more than the EBs sold for! (I think they were around 500 dollars street)
And dude, pull the trigger on that Lawhon for 299!!! They are still $500 everywhere else but pro audio star. I dig the different neck profile it has then all of my other Dean basses and the active pickup with passive vol and tone is a TOTALLY different sound. Much more gritty and sorta Pbass sounding than my others with CRAZY high output. I have to leave the volume at around halfway or it starts to Overdrive the amplifier!!
Plus......the color is frigging awesome!

I liked the stock pickup, but I’m a tinkerer. I put in a nordstrand 3 band preamp and and the big blade pickup. It just sounds “clearer”.

I love the bass though. The action is almost flat with zero fret buzz. It plays like a $1000 bass. I bought it as soon as they were released, and I was able to meet up with Eric at NAMM 2011 and he signed the headstock first me.

I wish the lawhon was a PJ or something different. But I guess I could always get those routes and a new pick guard and it would look stock since the MM is under the pick guard.

tempting for sure!!!

is that Ben Chafin as in Ben Chafin of Guitar Repair of Tampa Bay where I bring my partscaster guitars to get assembled and tweaked ?
Google his name.

You'll see he was involved in a few other guitar companies after leaving Dean. To me it seems like he should be working for some innovative guitar company using his ability, knowledge and experience for excellent results.

He has Chafin custom guitars online and some connection with Electra guitars from the 70s (don't know why) , They did have the crackercaster bass made from Florida woods but I didn't care for it ... he does great work !!!!!

I see you found one of my catalog pages?
Here are some more.
You'll notice that the earlier Edge Pro 4 string basses had a BadAss II bridge and then later went to the momlithic bridge.
Nice collection!

B-Mac - thank's for the few catalog pages.
And now short info about my new Dean: Yesterday the Razor arrives. As you could see in the Pictures i posted two days ago, there are missing some knobs, the strings are rusty and all was dusty and dirty.
So i disposed the rusty strings, cleaned the whole bass with bridge and fretboard, oiled the fretboard, put new DR 105 - 40 strings on and made a neck and string adjustment. Also I put some knobs on, which i have left over. The pu's work both and also the eq. After all I have a super light an well sounding instrument, which is very easy to play. After a little work I am very happy with this bass.
Have a nice sunday, Sigi
PS: The only thing i would change some day, are single coil to humbucking pu's.

Sigi, have you tried raising the pickups? If they won't lift up, the foam under them may be flattened. If you still don't like them install some DiMarzio model J jazz pickups. The Js are humbucking, higher output and will fit your bass and budget. I bought some for my razor but got a good growl out of the stock ones after adjusting. The model Js ended up in my Dean juggernaut jazz bass where they made a real difference.

Did you replace the pups? Only asking as they’re not the same as the seller’s pix of the same bass?

I was showing this one off over at the Black'n'Maple Club The "Official" Black 'n' Maple Club - Part Four and B-Mac asked me to post it up over here too. 2010 Hillsboro fiver.

It was part of a deal for another bass I wanted and since it was a B'n'M I went for it. Funny thing is I don't even play fivers. Seems like a decent bass though. Might just do a set-up and flip it or trade for a 4 string. I'm pretty sure it is a 2010. Judging by the SN which begins with O 10. I was a little bit worried about it at first when I looked at it because the neck had a lot of bow in it and the action was pretty high. I took a chance on it anyways and luckily the truss rod turned easily and I was able to get the neck straightened out pretty good.

The action still needs to come down a bit and since the saddles for the B and E are already bottomed and judging by the way the neck sits in the pocket, I'd say the saddles were bottomed out like that when it shipped from the factory. I'll have to shim the neck to get the adjustment back but I think it'll be nice when I get it finished.

Also needs a good cleaning which I'll do when I pull the neck.
