Dean Club!!!

Serial number is 07030015... board dots are interesting, they where the frets would be and precisely in line with the side dots, not sure I see the point myself as obviously they're not visible while you're playing. If they are a later mod they are very well done, could they be a factory option?
Well, Here's the response from Dean Guitars:

Subject: Dean Performer CE Fretless

Gentlemen,

I'd like to ask your help identifying this Dean ABG
It appears to be a Dean Performer CE Fretless 32" MIK
It has a S//N of 07030015... which is a partial number.
It appears to be a 2007 model.
This is around the time Dean started phasing out the MIK 32" Performers and bringing in the MIC 34" Performers which then gave way to the 34" Exotica basses. (Not counting the EAB models)

I own several Dean ABGs. 32" MIK Performer CE, 32" MIK Performer Plus, 32" MIK 5 string Performer Plus, 32" MIK Exotica Radiant, 34" MIC Performer quilt maple (gorgeous), 34" MIC Exotica QA and Exotica fretless QA, plus the mighty EABC.
I also have Dean catalogs going back to 1999, but some are only pamphlets or 'new model' catalogs and not full line catalogs.

What is odd about the bass pictured is that it has dots on the FB. No Performer CE 32" MIK basses have dots on the FB that I have seen or seen in catalogs. Could this be some special end of model edition or do you think maybe a previous owner may have modified it?

Your help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

------------------------------
As you can see they don't have a few things correct. I believe that is because yours is a true transition model using items from the Performer's past and it's future. Yours has a Spruce top and is not 34". Yours has an abalone rosette and (clay) dot inlays on the FB and side dots on the side of the neck all where the frets would be. Every fretless Dean that I have seen or owned had the side dots where they would be if the neck was fretted as in between the frets.

For example:
The MIK 32" Performer has the pre-amp on the lower bout.
i2tekzcbd1e5vywzo0d2_wdp.jpg

And it's a Dean EQ-7545 pre-amp
vmdtlywhvzuonlwxksfw_wdp.jpg

Yours is located on the upper bout
IMG_5275.JPG

and it is a Prener pre-amp...

Similar to the Prener pre-amp on my 34" scale Performer Quilt Maple MIC which has a piezo and internal mic, while yours doesn't have the mic.

Yours is definitely 'in between' and not common.

Well then you need to post up Slacker. :D
I'd like to see what color you got. I still think about the purple from time to time, but since I already have the green and the silverburst it seems a little redundant.
Sung to the tune of frere jacques...I’m a Slacker...slacker slacker slacker, I’m a Slacker...slacker slacker slack! :smug:

But seriously I picked this up from a mom & pop music store about 35 miles away from me on December 28. Christmas present to myself. I saw it on ‘Verb and figured I’d drive since I had to drive 15 miles in that direction to get my Jeep serviced. Store’s been around since 1981 and it feels great to patronize a small music store like ‘days of old’.:D

It’s in really great shape and I’m surprised by the range of the pre-amp with these MM style pups. :bassist:

Please enjoy the sounds of my Dean "Jeff Berlin" Made in Czech Republic bass - it's fantastic!

Nice playing!
Besides the vid any pics of your bass would be nice to see.
Looks like the one I’ve been trying to buy from a guy on CL in California for the last month or more.
There’s a few here who own one. I currently own a Czech Maple Quilt, USA Patchwork and an active MIC previous owner modified model with Bass Lines pups and a 3 way switch added.
How long have you had it?
From the video it looks to be in great condition.

Do you also have a red Palladium too? That’s what it looks like on your YouTube page.

Hey B-Mac, yes, that's my red Palaedium as well!

Photos below, I bought this about a year ago off of eBay. It was a new old stock from a music store in Florida. Someone bought it, and sold it almost right away. When I got it, it was in NEW condition aside from a tone pot that had been replaced due to scratchiness.

Ah yes, it is all coming back to me.... @TheBassmaster27 stepped in for me while I was 'away' back in January 2020.
Very nice!

I am really interested in one of these new Select Z’s...I have always wanted an
Explorer or Explorer style bass but I want to ask you Dean guys a question and it is not meant to be snarky etc.

I have a 1986 57 reissue P I bought new and a 2011 American Standard Jazz...owned a lot of Fenders and Rics and I really am not wanting to come off as a snob etc. but my daughter has an Ibanez “mid range” priced bass and I just don’t like the fit and finish or feel of it next to my trusty old P and J stuff...how are these “mid range” Deans in general?

Obviously I have not seen the new Select Z and it is Indonesian built and that is not a show stopper per say because I have had, for example, some really nice Japanese and Korean instruments but what level are mid range Deans?

Just looking for input since if I were to pull the trigger on one it would be sight unseen.

Well, they meaning Dean have actually separated these ‘Select’ models as a tier above their ‘Standard’ models.

These ‘Select’ models are made in Indonesia and I suspect Cor-Tek is making them, but I don’t know that for sure.

But I wouldn’t compare these to the previous Dean Z Metalman basses as these are supposed to be a step up.

These are brand new for 2021 and no one here yet has reported in with trying or buying one. My advice is to find a Dean dealer and try one out. I haven’t seen new Dean’s in any GC for quite a while, but I have seen new Dean’s in smaller mom & pop shops that are dealers.

There’s a Dean dealer near me and I might just have to go and check one out. However, I’m not really into the pointy bass look.

Even if you do not like the style an honest assessment is always nice if you get your hands on one to try out...

My last bass acquisition of 2020, delivered on December 30, 2020.
It is as pointy as I’ll get, including my Vendetta and Hardtail.
Dean Custom Zone Gloss Black 2008 bolt-on passive MIC
In great cosmetic shape, but needs some adjustments, most notably the nut/string alignment, however it is still surprisingly playable.

Treated my Dean fretless acoustic to a set of 32" scale TI Jazz Flats... much better than the old set of long scale La Bellas I had on there which were very dark. The TI Flats need playing in to mellow a bit but sound great on the Dean. The short scale E is quite beefy at .106! Interesting that the G has wound right to the edge of the silk on the machine head post even though it's short scale.

Ps question - has anyone put a heel strap button on their Dean acoustic?
