Dean Club!!!

Hi, I am new to TB,

I am also new to bass, I have a blue Dean Hillsboro bass. It is an import, but it is fantastic. I have rotosound strings. I am a member of the Dean owners association (DOA) I have 6 Dean guitars as well. I am probably getting either another Hillsboro or a Juggernaut in the near future. I use Ashdown amps.
Which Dean guitars do you have?
I have a gorgeous Acoustic Exotica Paduk and an electric Palomino in gloss natural

My Buddy Richie has one of those. I drove it to Tampa for him one year.

I live in Philly, cool that you are in PA. What was your forum name? I will ask if you can join without Facebook. I hang out all the time with mrbradworld .
B-Mac same as here.
I’m also originally from closer to Philly from Phoenixville.

? Not sure what post you’re responding to.
How long ago was that?
They only made three of these as verified by Brad Mader at Dean.
All three have completely different wood pieces on the top that makes each unique.
Jeff’s ‘Grinch’ was sold to someone in Belgium I believe.
The only other one would be the original prototype.

It was 2 years ago, it was definitely a Jeff Berlin, i thought it was a patchwork, but maybe I am wrong.

The Czech made instruments are awesome.
I own three Czech made basses:
Jeff Berlin Signature Quilt Maple
Edge Euro Select
Edge Euro Improv
They are real sleepers.
I'd love to see a pic of the Czech made Icon

Yeah, they only made a total of 3, so either your buddy bought the prototype or it wasn't a Patchwork.

Here they are.

Subject: Dean USA Jeff Berlin Patchwork Bass

Brad and Scott,

Is there a way to find out how many USA Jeff Berlin Signature Patch work basses were made at the Tampa factory?

I own one.

Jeff Berlin had the 'Grinch' Model.

The one shown in the catalog looks different than mine or Jeff's.

That's a total of 3. Question came up at talk bass.

Were all of the Patchworks different, but with the same top woods?

It was 2 years ago, it was definitely a Jeff Berlin, i thought it was a patchwork, but maybe I am wrong.
I have to tell you, you have really piqued my interest in this, because it would be great to know either where the prototype is or if this is actually a different USA JB bass. Possibly a USA JB Basic. Which is a Patchwork without the 'patches'.

It would be so cool if they made a bass version.
Yes, the USA made ones are beauties too.
The current 2021 Dean Catalog for basses is a bit 'meh'.
They need to spice it up a bit with some bling..

I have played just about every possible dean made, czech, Japanese, Korean, USA, Indonesian, and Chinese. Oh and my buddy confirmed it wasn't a patch Jeff Berlin, just a 3 piece blond body

It would be so cool if they made a bass version.

New Dean owner... fretless ABG, label inside says PBCE FL and Hand Crafted in Korea (I'm guessing the south). Sounding great with a set of La Bella low tension flats on.
As promised.
Here's a catalog page from the 2005 Dean catalog with your bass.
If you pass along the first few characters of your bass S/N I might be able to tell you what year it is.

Here's a page from Dean's 2001 catalog
2001 p33.jpg

You'll notice that there was no Fretless Performer mentioned in the 2001 catalog.

Your bass has something very interesting. It has dots, but it isn't lined. I'm wondering if this was possibly a previous owner mod?

Serial number is 07030015... board dots are interesting, they where the frets would be and precisely in line with the side dots, not sure I see the point myself as obviously they're not visible while you're playing. If they are a later mod they are very well done, could they be a factory option?

These were Made in Korea.
The only basses they made that had options available were USA made and I never saw a Dean USA make an ABG.

Looks like your is a 2007 and I don't have a full catalog for 2007, just a partial new instruments catalog.

The next full catalog I have is 2007/2008 and the new ABGs were all MIC and 34" scale.

So I am beginning think yours is some transition model. Does the label inside the bass looking in from the sound whole have any other info, like a model number?

The Made in Korea designation was on the back of the headstock as a small gold foil with black sticker. These were usually taken off or fell off over time.

Give me a day or two to get an answer on your 'different' neck.

Again, it looks to be in great shape.

Enjoy it.

I own an Dean Exotica Quilt Ash Fretless 34" and have nickel flats on it. No lines or dots on the FB, just side dots where they would be if it was fretted.

So the placement of your FB dots and side dots is also 'SPECIAL'. It may very well be that a PO did this and not Dean.

Could you check your scale length?
I’m waiting on some additional information.
