This bottom one is mislabeled and should be Edge Select 4

These are all the European EDGES that I have info on

You got yourself a really beautiful bass. Did it compare to the $399 GC used price posted above?

I'd really like a 4 string version of the one you just got.

Please keep us up to date.

I hope some of the above info helps. I have no years for these, but they have to be around '98 - '99 based on the headstock. Can you post a pic of the back of the headstock?

The one I got is the exact one you posted... the one on GC recently.

Oh, man if I had that Hammer 10 string I'd just play that octave 'B' to make the windows rattle in my house!

It was an interesting beast. It needed new/ better strings, but I got it playing as well as I could. The body was light, so it neck-dove like crazy. The pickups and pre were pretty generic, but the hardware was decent enough. I got it to try it, but I have no practical use for it!

Nope. The Edge 2 is an active 2 band preamp and the Edge 3 is an active 3 band preamp, hence the names Edge 2 and Edge 3.
What's odd about the E2 is that it is shown as active and has the obvious battery slot, but the controls are described as V/V/T/T. Aren't two band active usually V/V/B/T? Did they (Dean) screw up on their website description?

Yeah, this reminds me of the whole US Peavey Millennium line... high quality, only made for a few years, very little info to find anywhere. What is out there isn't the full spectrum of what they produced, as there are plenty of oddball color/ hardware/ pickup configs that were never officially listed.
That Dean Club member number looks mighty fine in your signature!!!

I grabbed this one yesterday, and it's sitting here as we speak. I've been on a Spector kick recently, with a Legend 5 neck-thru and a Rebop 5 DLX, both of which made me gas for a Euro 5. Doing a little research, the Dean is essentially the same thing, but at about half the price or less. I tweaked it to my liking, and I LOVE this thing. It's labeled as a European Custom Select, but has all the features of an Improv, minus the color. I assume there was a transition period of some kind? I've seen other Dean Euros that have black hardware, and others that are bolt-ons (their version of a Rebop?).

Anyway, I get to gig her tonight, and I'm more excited about it than the Ibby SRMS805 I bought new earlier this week!

Also, is the preamp on these EMG? There are no markings of any kind, but it has the two dip switches that control the treble frequency, like on EMG pres. There's a circuit board on the bass pot, and the treble pot has flying leads that connect to the same board.

I'm considering swapping guts between this and my Rebop (EMG 40P5X and 40DCX, SNC 3-band Haz clone preamp) to try and replicate the classic Spector tone, like Queensryche, on a 5.

That thing is sweet! What a price too. I thought about getting it myself but since I primarily play 4s these days I couldn't justify another 5. Glad a TBer picked it up.

What kind of amps do you guys play your Deans through? I'm a big fan of the newer Fender Rumbles. Light weight and loud as hell if needed. My Edge Pro sounds crystal clear through my 500w combo amp. I generally keep the amp settings pretty flat and do my EQing on the Dean.

I use the Fender Rumble 100 watt combo
I also have a Peavey 15 watt practice amp
I'd love to try one of the Fender Rumble amps that have the woofer and tweeter for my 8-string Rhapsody

I may have said this before, but based on the info I have (posted) and the matching headstock I'd say this is definitely an Edge Improv. All the others whether 'Custom' or 'Select' Czech made have a black headstock. Also, the pups are listed as EMG-CS pups and not EMG-HZ pups. I believe from conversation with staff from EMG that the CS are actual active pups not like the HZ which are passive pups. EMG does return e-mails unlike other company's so I'd give that a try. I might still have a contact name and email address handy somewhere...found it:

Hey B,

My name is Alison; I work in customer service here at EMG. Your guess it as good as ours! Haha, no- I kid. I think mostly it has to do with cost. Many of the guitar manufacturing companies build overseas and the factories that build the instruments already carry parts for passive pickups and also solder rather than specialize in the quick connect system.

It’s a really frustrating concept, but it goes a little like this- There are so many guitars that fit onto a pallet to ship. So even if it cost the manufacturer $4.00 dollars more per guitar to put active pickups and an active EQ, that is $4.00 more per guitar which means a pallet that costs another estimated $500.00 to ship and because they are shipping more than one pallet, the increase per pallet isn’t worth it to the manufacturer.

And now that the instrument market has a lot of used instruments, the cost reduction to the manufacturer is even more important these days. It’s really frustrating as the company beholden to the instrument manufacturers, but it does introduce people to our passive product (silver lining).

Now that you have that information, if you have any other questions about product- let me know! I’m happy to help.

All The Best,

Alison Turner

Subject: Re: New Kirk Hammett Bone Breaker Set!

Why do so many manufacturers use the EMGHZ pick ups with an active pre-amp when the EMGHZ pickups are actually passive? Don't get me wrong; they're great pups. I just don't understand why they it. I have 3 basses that have this arrangement and was just explained to me by a user on TalkBass that the EMGHZ pup is passive and that the EMG40 would be a good replacement on my Schecter.

I was like huh? whaddya mean it isn't active? It's an active preamp, why wouldn’t it have an active pup?

Please educate me so I can look into this further for my Schecter Stilleto Studio 5-er, my DEAN Rhapsody 8-string and my Dean Edge Pro 4 string.

Thanks.

Hey B,

I mean- I may be a little bias, but yes. Our passive pickups are great, but we have way more variety with active pickups and we simply enjoy doing active pickups more than passive. The kicker is that once a passive pickup goes through and active EQ system, it acts much more like an active pickup than a passive pickup.

The EMG40 just simply means that it is a 4” soapbar housing (length) that is usually designed for 4/5 string basses. The best thing to do is double check the length of the pickups you have to make sure you don’t need the 35 for 45 housing- 3.5” or 4.5” (length).

My next question would be, what do you want out of a pickup? Do you want a really traditional sound, do you want something that blows people away? I can make some suggestions for you.

Thanks! So anytime I see anctice pre-amp (9-volt battery) and it has EMGHZ it would be better to replace with active EMG pups. So, for a 4 string bass with the EMGHZ soap pups what would be the next level replacement that is active? Is there such a thing as the EMG40 for 4 string basses? I’m not familiar enough with your product line to name them correctly so please correct me. I’m not necessarily looking for top tier, just the next step up that is active and leaving the existing pre-amp alone. I used to work on lionel trains with my dad so soldering is not a big deal. Thanks.

Played the Improv/ European Select/ whatever it is the past 2 nights... I love it. Couldn't put it down. I'm returning the Ibanez I bought (and paid about twice as much for) since it kinda felt like a toy or a short scale for some reason. I played it for literally one song, didn't like it, and played the Dean the majority of the rest of the night. Feels great, sounds great. I'm planning on swapping the guts with my Rebop on the next day or two to really set it off!

It looks to have all the features of an Improv, but it clearly says it's a European Custom Select on the back of the headstock, so I dunno. Whatever it is, I love it.
