Dean Club!!!

Hi, all. B-Mac said I should pay this club a visit. :) I've got a 2004 Dean Performer Koa on its way to my house. Should be here Tuesday. It looks simply gorgeous in the pictures and the store I purchased it from says that the neck and the action are great. I hope so. I'm excited to get it! Fishman Classic 4 preamp. 32" scale about to be strung with black nylon-coated strings. It looks to be a nice Korean model that listed for about $750 new. I'm hoping it will be a nice compliment to my Takamine 34" with phosphor bronze strings. I like variety!
Here's a page from the Dean 2007/2008 catalog that includes your bass

Thanks, B-Mac. Yep, that's her, though the serial number seems to indicated a 2004, if the first two numbers are the year (04). Mine also has a Fishman Classic 4 preamp in it. I got her today. She's a thing of beauty. Not a scratch on her to be found anywhere. The action is nice and low, great for the finger-style bass I want to learn. She sounds pretty good acoustically and even better amp'ed, but the A-string is substantially louder than all the other 3. I should have my black nylon-coated strings here tomorrow and while I'm changing the strings, I'll make sure that the saddle is flat on the bottom and not humped at the A position. That's usually the case, but we'll see. I post a couple of pictures of her at my house later.

I’m sure it is a 2004.... I just don’t have a 2004 catalog yet. I’m going through my other catalogs to figure out when they stopped making them.

DEAN USA

I noticed a few Dean owners here have a USA model and I am soooooooooo jealous. I'd love to be able to someday have a Dean USA model that isn't crazy expensive. Right now there is a one of a kind DEAN USA Deceiver Bass on fleaBay. I am not at all in any way connected to the seller. I just wanted to post the pictures of it here to share as it is a real beauty. I have G.A.S. for it, but I have self imposed spending limits that I simply never cross.

Well, I did it...I just dropped some coin on a used Black Sparkle Stylist. Was watching this on reverb and flebay for 3 months. Was ended on fleabay so I figured I'd make an offer on Reverb. Didn't think I'd get it and 6 hours later....viola...accepted my offer! Looks like decent shape, but the bridge and tailpiece have oxidized so I'll either be polishing them or replacing them. Already found what appear to be exact replacement parts on aliexpress. Was thinking of toying with black chrome replacement parts, but that style might be harder to find, but I think it would look cool. This model also has the 6 pole piece humbuckers so I might be changing those too for real bass (4 pole piece) humbuckers

Here's a pic from the seller.

Well, I picked this up On Wednesday as it was delivered a day early, but I couldn't sign for it because I work during the day in an engineering office. So, the UPS hub is 5 minutes from where I work so I picked it up at lunch. Opened it up at the UPS facility. Absolutely beautiful condition. Just a slightly mark on the binding along the side of the neck at the 12th fret marker.

Got her home. Had to go to VFW meeting and then to my Bass lesson.

Got home and took it out of the case to test it out. Something was flopping around inside. It was the insides of on of the pickups. I then noticed how high the strings were. The bridge was set really high on the E string side, so I proceeded to lower the bridge, only to see that the bridge pickup cover was so high that when I lowered the strings on the E string side they hit the top of the cover.

So, I have a beautiful unplayable bass. Not all that big a deal because I planned on replacing the pickups since the rumor is on these older Stylist Basses is that they have 6 pole guitar pups rather than bass pups. However, it would have been nice to actually be able to plug it in and play it just to test her out.

When I first confronted the seller I asked in an innocent way when was the last time he played the bass and the response was 'not in a long while, and when I did it was rarely'. Then when I told him about the condition of the bass as shown above he stated the he 'played around with it before he shipped it'.

Really?

Anyway, it is in great condition and the HSC only has a nick here or there.

Pix later.

ABG feedback

Quite a few of you have Dean ABGs and I wanted to hear your experiences on this. Some ABGs are worse than others and it certainly is not isolated to Dean ABGs.

What do you do to minimize it.

When I play at church, it's through the board, so feedback is never an issue.

When I play at home, as long as I don't aim the sound hole at the cabs, I'm fine.

Hello, folks. Anyone had any experience with new Dean Edge? I am interested in Dean Edge 1 PJ mahogany and Dean Edge 2 (with MM) pickup. Reason is that my buddies from the band Wrath are using Dean Guitars and are quite happy with them. Another gentleman in the band Conniption is using Dean Razorback and is also happy with it. I was just wondering if anyone tried new PASSIVE dean Edge.

I can't speak about the Edge 1, but I love my Edge Pro. Older Edge basses were primarily Korean made. Most of the newer Dean Edge basses are now made in China. I think it would be a good idea to try before you buy if you can. You used to see Dean basses at GC quite regularly about 5 years ago or so, but I haven't seen them at GC lately. So a google search of Dean Dealers in your area might be a good idea. Also, the new Edge 1 basses are being offered with quite a few variations from previous years. The PJ versions look great IMHO, but I have no idea how they sound or what the quality and playability is like. The Edge line of basses is pretty much Dean's main electric bass:
Playmate Version Edge 09
Edge 09 Passive
Edge 1 Passive
Edge 2 Active
Edge 3 Active
Edge 4 Active
Edge 5 Active (5 string version of Edge 4)
Edge 6 Active (6 string version of Edge 4)
Edge 8 Active (8 string version of Edge 4)
Edge 10 Active (35" neck)
Edge Pro Active neck thru
To make things more complicated different years of manufacture have different variations. This is especially true for the Edge 09, Edge 1 and Edge 10. For 2017 and 2018 some of these listed above were not available. I've seen a few Edge 1 in Mahogany that I really like that were lighter than the dark mahogany shown below. For a little more money there are the Edge 2 and Edge 3. They have exposed pole pickups more like Music Man style sound and come in 2 band Active and 3 band Active, hence Edge 2 and Edge 3 model names.

Here are some catalog pages for the current different versions of the Edge 1

Hopefully someone here can help you out who actually has one. I know there a few Edge 09 owners as well as Edge Czech made owners here.

I have a USA made dean juggernaut prototype that I'm selling. It was the only(maybe first) model of the juggernaut series made in Tampa, Florida. I use to work at armadillo enterprise and copped this bad girl only to realize I was more into p basses. It has a long scale maple neck, 9lbs, Adler body, vintage hot jazz dmt pickups, and rotosound flatwound strings. It' a serious thumping machine and very versatile. If anyone is interested I can direct you to a demo video I made on YouTube, but for now enjoy the pictures.

I just got another Edge European Select 5, locally from a pawn shop, via eBay. Same amber color as my other one, but it's got the EMG-Hz's, black hardware, and black headstock. Will likely throw in the electronics from the other one. Even better price than the first one too! probably going to pick her up tonight!!

Based on the Catalog info I posted, and yes you pointed out catalog inconsistencies, that is an Edge Select.
Edge Improv
I think I like the one with matching headstock and gold hardware more.
Hopefully you can give an in depth comparison for both aesthetics and playability.
Nice!
You're getting really good at snagging these!
Is it neck-thru?
