Dean Club!!!

Does anyone know of a pickup that would be a drop in replacement on a dean edge 09? I love that bass but that pickup gets weaker and weaker to my ears the longer i play basses with better pickups. Through expensive amps, its better, but still really muddy. Even with a pick.
@MattSasquatch is looking for replacement pups on his Dean Custom II Bass too.
Might want to check out EMG and Bartolini for something that fits right in.
@NicJimBass and @eastcoasteddie have lots of experience with replacing pups on Dean basses.
They might be able to help you.

The 09 has the one soap bar pickup in the P position, right?
I can’t tell, but it might be an EMG45-size. You’ll have to measure L & W to be sure. Also, it has 4 screws, one on each corner, which is unusual. Most soap bar pickups would have 2 or 3 screws...
We’ll find something, but post measurements.

I'm guessing his pups are DMT pups?

Hi, folks. I found dean Edge passive with EMG pickups and 5 piece neck. The headstock is OLD style with very pronounced V notch. ANyone knows anything about it. Seller is asking 200 for it. Worth it? How would it compare to lets say Schecter C4. Which has SAME pickups but with pre amp and same 5 piece neck?. I heard very very mixed reviews about Dean. Heard some bad one heard some good one. Anyone knows anything about these?

DEAN with EMGHZ PICKUPS...1998 See Thru Charcoal
It's an older Dean, but it's still a Dean as in Elliot Rubinson era and not Tropical Music era. They're Korean made.
It has the EMG HZ pups. I have these on a few of my Deans that have active preamps. I like them.
@NicJimBass is all over EMG pups and I am sure he can tell you a lot about them. He's also all over their preamps, but since this is a passive Dean, that doesn't apply.
I've been eyeing this bass myself for at least 4 months. The seller thought it was only 2 years old until I told him how old it actually was based on the S/N and the catalogs I have.
It is certainly worth the asking price.

Here's another one at GC for a similar asking price.

My very first 5-string was this model and this color. Making me all nostalgic!

EMGHZ's are good pickups, but get a bad wrap because they're cheaper than their active brethren. I currently have a set in a Spector Rebop 5, with an Audere 4-band preamp, and it sounds great. Overall, it's a personal taste thing. I prefer the active sound at the moment, but these definitely have their place. Add a preamp to the bass in the listing, and it'll sing.

Here is my review of Dean Edge 1. PJ Mahogany. I was looking for an inexpensive mahogany PJ bass. I was given a gift of a Dimarzio P/J pickups and had no bass to put them into, so I decided to buy a mahogany bodied bass and put them in there. Thus I bought Dean Edge 1 PJ mahogany. Serial number WSM171201.0292
Made in China (that should have been first alarm)

1, Body. Made out of 5 pieces. In fact you can see the seems at a certain light angle. Body is very thin and "modern style".It ain't contoured (which is what I like, heavier the body, more wood - deeper tone) A very thin for my liking. 40mm. Just to compare my Yamaha RBX270 (now equipped with Seymour Duncan Basslines) is 43mm thick. My Washburn XB200 is 45mm thick. I did NOT like the fact that you could see the seams.

2. Electronics. The DMT pickups are surprisingly good and give a nice warmish mellow tone. With sufficient sustain and depth. Surprising for a bass that hs such a thin body. The Two volumes and two tones give a very wide range of sound. However on of the tone controls (for J pickups) is ALWAYS crackling. Cleaning it did not help.

3. Neck. VERY VERY COMFORTABLE. Easily as good as Ibanez SR500. Amazing comfort. However, it had SEVERE buzz. The causes were: partially risen 21st fret. Partially risen 14th fret. Both in E string. The frets can be depressed back in with a finger. Which means that they were never glued in during assembly. BAD. The biggest problem is that the neck had two slight dips and two slide hills, like gentle wave. Also on the bass side, while treble side was straight as an arrow. Giving a bit of a relief remedied that. Lowering the bridge saddles return the action back to fender factory specs, without buzz returning. However, the neck came warped.

It is utterly reprehensible that Dean sends basses with faulty tone controls and warped neck to the paying customers. The bass is going back to Dean. This was my first Dean product. This is my last Dean product.

FOLLOW UP TO THIS REVIEW. I decided to give Dean Another chance, after talking to my buddy who is a professional guitar player and has no less than 3 dean guitars. So I picked up another Dean 1 PJ mahogany.
What a stark contrast.
1. Sound. Very decent. Surprisingly so. This time electronics had ZERO issues, no cracking. Vol Vol Tone Tone are control found on MORE expensive basses, so they were very much appreciated.
2. Body. This time there was no issues with seeing the connection lines between parts of the body. Still thin body, thicker and more massive than current Ibanez series.
3. Neck... WOW... All I can say is WOW. I got the action on the Low E string at a hair more than 1/8 of an inch.
Overall grade 4.0 out of 5. Bass COULD have use a thicker, more massive body. Not griping about cheap electronics and cheap bridge, for 150 shipped, I can't expect better.

Overall I am happy with bass. The bass will be getting an upgraded pickups (Entwistle), and upgraded bridge. Someone gave me a Peavey T40 bridge and it seems that it SHOULD fit on that bass. IT will look funny as hell but the sound should only improve... I will post pics once upgrades are done.

True, they do get a bad rap, but I don't think it's because they're priced lower ($89 vs $99). I think how good/bad the HZ's sound depends on which pre is driving them. Matched up with an active EMG circuit (or any quality pre) they sound stellar. With a Spector Tone Pump Jr....not so great IMO. Agree that it's a personal taste thing, but a mis-matched pre doesn't help matters.

Hi. Thank you for comment
Believe it or not, I prefer PASSIVE sound, a bit more mellow. I really like the sound of Spector Performer (passive) and Rockbass corvette (Passive), and Peavey Grind (also passive). So you think 200 bucks is worth it?
