Dean Club!!!

I'm in. I've been lurking on ebay looking at a dean juggernaut for so long they sent me a $10 off coupon. That was the sign from God I needed. Casciointerstate has the tabaco burst for $249 minus the coupon it was $239. Nothing like a new bass at yard sale prices. I will use it to get my Geddy on.

Good solution!

I have a Dean EABC and the piezo seems to be failing, but only for the D string. I admit I don't know if it's even possible for it to fail in this way, but that's what I think I'm hearing.

Has anyone have experience with failing piezos in these? How do they fail, and what, if anything, might you have done to remedy it?

I think I'd like to avoid a soundhole pup, but who knows...?

Can the stock pup even be replaced?

I just picked up a Dean EABC over the weekend that has/had the passive piezo. The D string was not being picked up at all. I placed a thin shim under the D and G strings and the D was picked up, but the A was not. I removed the saddle and placed it on a straight edge where I could see daylight under the center third of the saddle. That cheap plastic saddle was making most of it's contact on the E and G strings. I sanded it back to flat and solved the issue, so that is the fix. I then tossed the passive pickup and installed a Fishman Presys Blend. Holy Moly does that thing sound spectacular!

That's the common fix with the saddle and the piezo. Happens on quite a few different makes and models. Sometimes its just dirt or saw dust under the saddle or under the piezo or both. Glad you got it worked out, especially since you did it yourself.

Here's a link to My 2012 Dean EABC that I bought used. The PO took out the passive electronics and put in an active LC-5 preamp and it sounds great and your Fishman probably sounds even better. The newest EABC and EAB are now equipped with the active preamps too.

Newest specs from the Dean website (they still use the old pix with the old passive slider controls):

The Dean Cutaway EABC Bass Guitar is a full-sized instrument with 34" scale that produces a deeper, fuller tone than bass guitars costing much more. Select spruce top; mahogany back, sides, and neck; balsamo fingerboard; and die-cast chrome tuners. Cosmetic touches include a vintage style soundhole rosette and multi-ply body binding. Equipped with a DMT G-03 Preamp system with build in tuner.

Thanks. Mine is a 2008 and minty-clean in appearance, but the all the frets were sharp enough to saw wood with. There were several grossly high frets from the 15th to the 24th. I did a fret level and smoothed over all the ends so, it plays pretty nice now. I'm replacing the saddle with a TUSQ this weekend. The plastic one is shot with deep grooves cut into it by the strings. I'm interested to see how it affects harmonics and sustain on a bass. They are spectacular saddles on six-strings.

That looks like a nice preamp on yours. I like the XLR output choice and the mic option. This is the Fishman I installed. I wanted it primarily for the phase switch and notch filter. It has the under-saddle piezo and a mic also so blending them gives some interesting tonal varieties.

Nice!

Any pix of the bass?

My frets were fine. No sharp edges and level. Yours probably got more use than mine did or maybe not taken care of as much by PO? I know leaving a stringed instrument in a non-climate controlled attic can do a tune (see what I did there?) on an instrument, especially sprout in low humidity. Just glad your getting it right. The big body on these really adds to the tone. Makes playing somewhat uncomfortable after a while. I think for the price they're a bargain and very underrated for what they are.

No pics, they all look the same, standard Dean EABC. There was no sprouting, just completely undressed frets. Poor workmanship in other words. Even the peg holes in the bridge were drilled out by amateurs, the backing plate inside the bass was splintered and they didn't bother to clean any of it up. Mind you, in 2008 the quality in Chinese guitar manufacturing was no where as good as it was in 2012 or today. They have really improved their game. By the way, my pegs are solid, not tapered and have no recess for the string, that recess is notched into the bridge/top/backing plate. Are your pegs that way too?

Even thought it's huge, it is more comfortable to play than a six string dreadnought. They are spectacular for the price used, considering I paid a buck and a quarter for it. If the quality has improved, which I can venture a guess it probably has, the $269 street price is very reasonable. I'll have to stop by Guitar Denter later and see if they have one to examine. If you know setup/repair, there are bargains to be had. Great bass.

I didn’t see the 12 in your outdoor pix
So you have
4
4fl
5
8
12

all active
None of the passive models, correct?

pretty amazing!!!

how is the fretless working out for you?
All active yes...
Since that picture was taken, I sold the Q4 because I got a razor 4 string.
The fretless is great! Though I set the action really low at first, I have since raised the action slightly. Now it suits my style nicely. Thanks for asking!
I was going to address set-up on the twelve next, but have yet to dive in. As a matter of fact, I may send it out for set-up.

Did you get the Razor NT that was recently on Music Go Round?

I bought this a few weeks ago but never got around to sharing

I bought this EAB at the local consignment store. This picture was in the local paper as footage from the "Fleatique" which is held twice a year. The bass is a right handed model but I flipped the strings, and it plays alright. I haven't been able to play it much because iv'e been busy, but it's a nice second Dean.
