Dean Z Tour.....

It is beautiful ! I own a 2009 DOA Transparent green Flying V bass (#10 of 20) It's got creme binding, Grovers and it seems a lot like a V Tour I saw some time ago and am looking to eventually buy. I don't think I've ever seen another one either for sale or mentioned any where.

How do I put this? It sounds stale. Im not a big fan of the way it sounds by itself or for most types of music. I use it in my thrash metal band and it sounds warm and punchy when its cranked through my RBI and Aggie GS412 and there are two other Marshall 412s in the room. So, it works great in that setting and thats exactly what I want it for. But, when I play it alone, it sounds thin. Ive got other basses to cover the other styles of music, jazz, rock, etc.

Im sure you could probably get more out of it, tone wise but, I havent found the type of tones I can easily get from my Spector or MTD. If youre looking to use it as a accompany instrument in metal or rock, I say go for it. With the right settings, you can get a thick punchy tone. But as a stand alone instrument, I would not consider this bass.

All in all, Im happy with it. It does what it was built to do. Punch the sh** out of the first four rows!
I remember seeing them go for around $800.00 back in the day....

I own one of those as well. I remember the seller on Ebay referring to it as a Psycho "Cabbie" bass. I love it, it's got such a full, warm sound plugged or unplugged. Any time someone walks into my music room at the house, they gravitate to it...My guitarist is always trying to borrow it.
Man it would be great if you could post some picks of your Dean basses!
I have a Stylist in Black Sparkle.
There are quite a few others that have a Stylist as well. At least 2 Cabbie's and one Sea Foam Green

I've been gigging a Dean EABC for about eight years...

The piezo pickup died a couple of years ago so I added a Kent Armstrong pickup to the sound hole cover, Man, did that ever improve the plugged in sound!

Good solution!

I have a Dean EABC and the piezo seems to be failing, but only for the D string. I admit I don't know if it's even possible for it to fail in this way, but that's what I think I'm hearing.

Has anyone have experience with failing piezos in these? How do they fail, and what, if anything, might you have done to remedy it?

I think I'd like to avoid a soundhole pup, but who knows...?

Can the stock pup even be replaced?

That is odd
Is your bass in a climate controlled house or is it hot and humid where you are and have your windows open?

Weather can have a big impact on ABGs and humidity can cause wood to swell

The piezo is just under the saddle and if the wood swelled in the bridge it could have lifted and in your case possibly lifted just under the D string

That’s the only thing I can think of that caused this since the electronics are passive

And welcome to TalkBass and DeanClub!!! :-)

When mine failed the volume dropped equally for all strings. Even worse was a bad 60 cycle hum. Volume dropping on just one string could possibly be from the bridge lifting as B-Mac said. The thin piezo wire sits directly under the plastic saddle the strings rest on. If the pressure on the piezo isn't even there will be volume differences between strings. I found this to be true when replacing a piezo one time.

If the volume drop is the only issue you can try gently tapping down on the saddle and see if it helps. If that doesn't work and you don't want to go the sound hole route you can just replace the piezo. It's pretty easy. Dean has replacements. There are different ones depending on your particular model. Call Dean and they can guide you through the process. I've talked to them and they are very helpful.

Edit: Sometimes a single string volume drop can mean the string is dead. A new set could possibly solve the problem.

This stewmac repair page can help even though it’s for an acoustic guitar

Your situation may be different but it shows some variables that can be causing your situation

It also shows you where the piezo pup is and what it looks like. Thin flat braided wire under the saddle in the bridge.

Well I've been away for awhile, but a few months ago I had the mods on my Dean Edge 09 done, and I've been running it through the paces since then. Here are a few bad photos as I don't have a really good one right now. I'll get one later.

Before I get into the technical aspects, I'll take care of the headstock purist people. My headstock went through hell and the paint was off of like 30% of it, so I sanded it all off. My friends brother owns a print shop, so he made me some decals and I went with that one. I was always a fan of the wings over the cursive anyway. The word Bassmaster is written on there too. This is because I got the profile name from the bass. The bass got nicknamed the Bassmaster by some of current/former bandmates. I think it's cool. But anyway, on with the technical aspects. When I last talked with @B-Mac, I was leaning towards using an EMG passive pickup and either the Fender Hi-Mass bridge or the Omega bridge, both of which are Leo Quan Badass clones. However in the end I took a different route. My local guitar/bass tech who does all my repairs helped me with the upgrades, and he came up with alternatives i ended up choosing in the end. First of all, he wasn't a huge fan of EMG's, and didn't like the idea of putting a 5 string pickup in the 4 string edge 09, even thought spacing wouldn't be affected. We decided, to keep the stock pickup, but change the tone knob to a Fender TBX circuit, which in short is a treble/ bass cut and boost. For the bridge, we decided to use a gotoh fender replacement bridge. I wanted to use the badass clone, and i'm going to on an upcoming project, but he decided that he could get the gotoh cheaper from his supplier and it would do the same thing. We also replaced the volume pot with a CTS pot and put in a switchcraft jack. We strung it with Ernie Ball Power Slinkys. In the end, the bass has this nice ping/growl sound that i can only compare to a passive jackson concert bass. Right now I have it strung BEAD going through the older model Fender Rumble 100, and it more than keeps up, in an outdoor venue with multiple percussionists and horn players mind you. I'm sorry if i made you go out and buy a whole bunch of parts that you don't need @B-Mac, but if you ever mod your Edge 09's with the EMG's and the Omega bridge, i'd be interested in seeing and hearing those mods. I'm happy with the way my Dean turned out, but I may buy another Edge 09 and try the other mods.

Cool! Really awesome!
And no need to apologize either. It's good to experiment. My stuff is still in packaging so this post is a reminder for me to get on the stick! I'd love to hear some sound samples.
I think the headstock turned out really good too!

I'll work on the sound samples. The bass isn't with me currently, but i'll have it this weekend and I'll put something together.

New Dean owner here - picked up a 1999 Dean European Custom Select Improv 4 for a song off of craigslist. Really amazed by the quality of this bass and also its heft! It's a lot heavier than it looks but so comfortable to play, and to look at :)
Congrats on that find, it is a beautiful bass.
Mine is the cherry red version and it's pretty nice but yours shows the maple figuring much better.
I was shocked at just how good the build quality is when I got my hands on it.
Kind of funny how much the used Czech made Spectors (effectively the same bass) sell for in comparison...and the 1999 Spectors didn't have a Wenge fretboard.
Don't know what you consider a song but I see the Czech Spectors going for $1200-$1900 used.

The Czech factory that made these were sure building beautiful basses, I don't know what name goes on the headstock of what they produce today...or if they are still making basses today.
The pictures of the cherry are very beautiful, and the trans purple too. I got it for $150. Needs to be gone through: condition/polished, setup, and new strings. It has some dings and cracks in the lacquer that I may try to repair, but i would not want to mess it up!
