Decorating a room, oldschool-like.

Here's how I remember it:

1. Go to your local used furinture store and find an old sofa, preferably green and with a couple of holes in it. All the better if you need a brick to hold up one end., Also, an old chair and a beaten-up coffee table. Make sure nothing matches!

2. Get a bunch of cinderblocks, three or four long planks of wood, and presto! Instant bookshelf!

3. The Hendrix and Dead blacklight posters have already been mentioned. Same with the milk crates.

4. Mount your Sansui stereo on top of the bookshelf.

5. IMPORTANT: Absolutely no computers, video games, or modern phones allowed. Only old rotary or touch-tone phones. Color TV is OK, black and white is preferable. No cable, just rabbit ear antenna. Playing cards are OK.

6. No CD's. Vinyl albums only. Some cassettes are permissible.

7. Garbage bags in the windows. Curtains are so bourgeois!

So there you go. When your friends come to visit you can say, "Welcome to the 60s!" :D

Don't forget an assembled sculpture you made from "found objects" (wonderful if it includes bones and feathers). As an alternative you can make a large collage, or have a big painting that changes as you work on it.

Burn incense at all times. Wear beads.

Torn car seats can be used as chairs/couches. Crates are end tables. If you manage to get a big wire spool(table) be sure to carve on it.

This thread makes me nostalgic for the revolving lamp I had that threw out different colors!

Damn! I forgot about the incense and the wire spool coffee table! Good call, rosanne!

I forgot...

Don't get just any candle holder, you've got to get some cheap Chianti wine at a grocery store or pizza parlor. The kind with the wide bottle and basket around the lower half. Drink the wine , and stick a candle in the top of the empty bottel. You've now got an instant, beautiful, continental candle holder.

And get extra aluminum foil to wrap around the rabbit ears on your TV.

For stereo. I preferred Julliette or Realistic, or better yet, that big old RCA chest-of -drawers size cabinet stereo my parents had. They still have it today.

Vintage furniture, Lava Lamps, table lamps, TV lamps, Swag lamps all add that sort of vibe. Plus there are all sorts of home decor touches that can add that flair: wall art, goofy clocks, mirrors, ash trays even some kitchen gadgets, cookie jars...we have all that sort of stuff, some from our grand parents but a lot we have collected, people always comment on stuff around our house (having interesting stuff forgives some of the mess)....
In many cities there are resale shops that have all that sort of stuff, there are several here in Austin and we also have Goodwill and Salvation Army shops that are good sources too.

I had a serious chuckle out of that one.

At first I thought you guys were sh****ng me with the cinderblocks, but I kinda start to dig that idea! :D

Though I can't for the life of me part with my compter and my video games... guess I have to leave those in a dark, separated room at the end of the hall. lol

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

You should just watch the Austin Powers movies and base your stuff on that. Certainly groovy 60's. I think Orange bass amps should go well with that.. Oh, and by accident I stumbled across a site in Germany that sells vintage wallpaper: Invalid Link Removed

- velvet Elvis (or crying clown if you can't find elvis)

- bead curtain for every doorway

- plaid couch

- one of those hanging lamps that had the wires around it, which had beads of oil that would descend the wires then get recirculated to the top
