Now, I give this tip to everyone. But, rather than starting a new thread, this is related to one of the many things of WHY you should ALWAYS have a detachable power chord. Whenever having to stack, or load your trunk, van or any other vehicle you decided to transport your gear. Especially heavy bass speakers. From 12" and up. Regular ceramic, or alnico.
It's better to either turn your speakers/combo
either face down or face up because:
1. Gravitational pull/push when driving over ANY light bump in the road.
2. The magnet in the cone/cones are used to moving in and out of the center of the cone anyway, when having sound. It's best to leave them in that
floating condition, so that they move accordingly whenever a gravitational pull/push is exerted to them. They will move up or down
but still in the middle of the cone!
3. If you transport them standing up, just as they were set on a stage, you exert gravitational pull/push to the cone from the side/side of the magnet, making them to want to move up/down instead of in/out. They have no slack space to do this at all,
so in the long run, the magnet will cause the whole speaker to sag, and the magnet will end up NOT being in the middle of the cone anymore. You will hear it first, it's like not tightening the screws to the spider in which the speaker is tightened to. In the end it will rip your cone, and you will have to have it reconed. It's not a long winded one. Real professional touring bands roadies loads their speakers in their flight cases with - actually - face up.
4. I've even heard that time/gravity does this to stationary subwoofers in large PA systems in clubs. Then the "technical in charge" person brings them out, goes into them and just turn them around. Unscrew all screws and turn on the speaker "spider" a half turn. Then, ever so slowly, gravity and time will "sag" the magnet back again into the middle of the cone.
If you still break your speakers in your car, leaving them face down or up, that they have bumped out of their positions anyway, chances are that the speakers are not your main concern by then, but moreso your personal injury. A car accident has occured, and you definitely gives a **** about any speaker or gear.
