DI vs Mic, you really want a 57??? Really???

I think 57's are best suited for snare drums (one on top, and one underneath). I wouldn't use one on a bass cab.

I used to work with a sound guy who always DI'd the bass, then mixed it with the miked cab (1x18" reflex) with an old style D12 in front. Amazing sound in the PA.

there is no single solution for every situation.
your blanket theory is a complete fail, as is every "blanket" theory.
you are much better off analyzing each situation independently and approaching it as unique.

I used to think that running the bass direct and mic'ing the guitars was always the best way to do it. This attitude was a complete FAIL also.

It is always a judgement call on what is best in any given situation.

Meh, I just plugged that curve into Audacity and noodled. It ain't that bad at all. It's certainly usable and a lot better than it looks on paper. I've heard lots worse.

Based on your observation, I can see why sound engineers like the Ampeg SVT/810 rig. Since the 810 doesn't have much usable freq. below 80 from what I've read, it rolls itself off so the the kick drum can be dialed in w/o worrying about a bass rig the goes down to 35 or 40Hz and is boosted by the bass player.

It seems to that while getting the lowest frequency possible for the bass may work at rehearsal or for smaller gigs, it can actually screw up the mix for bigger ones. Similar to a guitarist having too much on the low end screwing up the sonic space that the bass player should be taking up. The 57 seems to do the same thing, kinda of emphasizing that below 80hz is not much usable for most gigs.

Hmm. SM57 has a response curve almost exactly like the Eminence Legend B-810... My '78 810 doesn't have these exact drivers, but I'd guess it's probably a pretty good representation.

**edit... I guess not exact. I mixed up the 100hz on this with the 200hz on the sm57. Oh well. I can't DI, anyway.

Your sound man may not be that bad, but you can't change some things without moving walls or adding treatment
