Dialing in your tone

I figure my sound out the dumb-head way.
I use a wireless, and go out front next to the sound guy, so I know what he's hearing.
I adjust the EQ so the sound out front gets through the mix during the sound-check.
I can tweek it a bit either way if I need it a bit fatter or whatever, but if you're not getting through
the full mix, "your" tone preference is unimportant.

I also use a pf50t but with a bbc112 cab. For me tone is bass 1st, then amp and cab. I mostly play with a bruce johnson fretless 1 scroll and 1 shorty. It sounds very different when I play my fretless Pbass or others through it. I set the knobs in the middle, adjust the pre-gain to taste and then adjust tone controls on the amp to fit the room and players I'm working with. The cab I use has lots of mids so I never go past 5 on the mids.

And to answer the above the best tone in the audience is the one that sounds thin and crappy on stage. Rich and plummy on stage is an indestinct boom on the floor.
Often true.
I tend to use more mids, ultimately, than I think sounds right to me on stage. But, outfront, in the mix, it still sounds fat. I really like using wireless for soundcheck because I get to hear what the audience hears.

I typically use one of my modeling amps (two of the same) with a few selections, so whichever one I chose kinda takes care of that. Otherwise flat EQ, with some compression since it's there.

I'll adjust the controls on my bass from there.

I have a rack rig with a SansAmp RBI (a recent purchase), but only gigged it once (very heavy rig) and just twisted knobs until I found what worked, sounded great.

I just today received my Broughton “always-on” variable HPF and I'm getting ready to patch it in now, so I expect that to be part of my sound (or at least protect my speakers). :)

I’m looking at a Broughton.
