Didn't get paid for a gig :(

I went through 3 pages of this thread and just couldn't read anymore without putting this out there.

First of all, as the OP said, he was playing at an "event"....he didn't say it was a church service. Yes they were playing Gospel and yes it was worship but you don't have a gospel concert "event" and expect the band not to get paid whether it takes place in a Church building or another venue.

Secondly, as the OP said, it was his "friend" who said he was gonna pay for the work. The "friend" and the pastor said "they'd get with me the coming week and settle with me." From that point on there is not mention from the OP of ever trying to contact the pastor. All his dealings were with his so called "friend". Before people throw the pastor and the church under the bus, they probably should advise the OP to get in touch with him/her and try to settle the matter directly with them....person to person and not in a service or on a website. If dealing directly with the pastor doesn't settle things then you have cause to take it further. Until you've at least tried to deal with the pastor you shouldn't bother with thread such as this one that cause people to slander someone who may have no idea of what is going on. This "friend" of yours was the leader of the event and therefore was probably put in charge of everything for the event. He may have even told the pastor that everything has been taken care of....including paying those who were owed. If so, the pastor wouldn't have any cause to question him. This "friend" lied to you and may also have lied to the pastor so please go to the pastor and speak with him before allowing this thread to possibly slander him any further.

The pastor was never to blame IMO. I didn't mean to make him out that way, it was never my intention, really sorry if I did. The pastor pulled me aside and, after talking with his son the band leader and organizer of the event, said they would love to pay me and to talk further with his son, the BL, about it. As a pastor, I know he has a lot of duties to perform all throughout the week. His son however is 28, has no job, sleeps till noon, etc.... and he controlled, counted and handled the money from the event. It seemed logical to me, at the time, that the son would be the better option to go through for payment since IMO, paying some random young adult who doesn't attend his church for one evening two months ago wouldn't be high on his to do list, I doubt he'd even remember me! In retrospect, I see that you're right, I should've gone through him, not his irresponsible son. The pastor is not the bad guy in my book. My beef is with his son only.

I would go speak to the pastor anyway. He may speak with his son about it an make sure you get the money that was supposed to go to you.

If an agreement existed between someone who was apparently acting on behalf of the church gig and a musician, the musician should be paid for their work. How does a contractor get paid by a church? Same as get paid by anyone else- a contract. If someone wants to work for a church without being paid, that's up to them but if the agreed payment doesn't come when there's an agreement, the person/organization who's liable should pay without pulling the "But we're just a small congregation, with limited resources" act.

With all of the hypocracy, abuse and deception by clergy, televangelists and others in religious organizations, it's best to be careful when entering into any kind of business agreement with them, unless they have a reputation for handling business matters ethically. This shouldn't be assumed just because it's a church- they made their bed, so they have to lie in it. I was raised Catholic and the church I went to started as a small group in a garage, not far from where the church was built. They didn't just have priests, they had a Monsignor and he ran it like it was any other successful business- watched the costs, minimized frivolous expenses and treated people fairly. The one thing he did that went against his vow of poverty was buy a new Lincoln Continental every few years. In the '60s, this wasn't a terribly high cost when the church's finances were as healthy as they were. I think the current state of the world would probably kill him, if he was alive now. He would be totally disgusted.

I don't think it breaks forum rules to point you back to the Matthew 18 reading mentioned earlier. It basically says to do exactly that if quieter approaches don't work.

You've been sneaking off to Sunday School again, haven't you!! :)

Might not break rules, but it's only a valid statement if you care what some dude named Mathew (who may or may have existed) wrote. IMO, jmattbassplaya's writings have more credibility than a pile of stories written for power/political gain 2000+ years ago, and subjected to 2000+ years of editing for further power/political gain, and also subjected to sketchy translations.

So, according to the writings of jmattbassplaya 08:12:2011, I say call him out! And post the video!

I'm sorry, but you NEVER tell someone to 'keep the damn money'~ that just gives him the idea that he can spend the rest of his life screwing other bands. You get a court date in small claims court & let him tell his story to the judge. Believe me, when a court date is set, the money comes out very quickly. You may still be able to take him to court, but your comment to 'keep the damn money'~ may blow it for you.

I finally resolved a financial grievance of my own yesterday.

I opened new accounts at a new bank in January. They wrote my account numbers on a convenient little card for easy reference. I used the numbers they wrote as the destination for my federal tax return for fiscal year 2010.

The account numbers belonged to someone else. A stranger recieved my return back in April.

Once I became aware of all this (in early June), I called my bank and demanded that they fix it. They insisted they couldn't, and recommended that I open a case with the IRS.

I opened the case. The IRS sent me a letter earlier this week, stating that since they didn't make the error, they could do nothing to fix it.

Yesterday I called the bank to inform them that I have hired a lawyer, and will be suing them for the ammount of my tax return (a big fat bluff). They called me back twenty minutes later, and told me my money could be found in my savings account.
Guess I should have done that in the first dang place... :scowl:
