Actually it looks like it's missing some stuff. I have the Compact and I don't see the lamp connector on the back next to the talkback jack. Maybe it's on the front, can't tell. I think the deal is you're paying for real Midas preamps, more robust motorized faders and a color monitor. Otherwise it's the same. I do like the increased angle on the upper board. Couldn't be happier with my Compact though, picked mine up for 1750 back when MF used to carry them.

Same chip doesn't always mean same software. Apple and Dell use the same chip.
There may be differentiation in the software, and what and how it communicates to other gear.
Just look at some pro software and differences in prices there.
Maybe more ram, or flash, Maybe different levels of pro-support?
Don't know, but Both look to be good deals to me.

Its just too close for my tastes to justify $1000 more. X32 Compact gets you 95% there & as long as you dont abuse it, it will last.

I'm not advocating to spend the extra $1000 or whatever...but it's not quite the same package...

The Midas-labeled unit has slightly better faders, supposedly a little better-quality mic press, and other improvements in hardware. Plus the Midas name.

The improvements aren't enough for me to spend the extra cash on an M32 over an X32 for my band needs (and that's more than $1000 difference. Closer to $2000).

I need to revise the last statement. The upgrades are definitely worthwhile upgrades, but for my band needs, the X32 serves very nicely as it is. I'm not trying to satisfy a national act's production rider with it and it works very well in its current form.

I'm currently leasing one that is very seldom used by its owner. I plan to have my own by the end of summer, unless this owner finally decides he can live without this one.

So not that we know whats out there I've been doing some more research & app testing

X Air app for the XR-18: Not a bad app, pretty basic but it did crash on both my phone & newer android tablet losing ALL the changes I was making. Now I obviously dont have the unit & I'm not sure if when I rebooted it would come back & the xr-18 would tell the app where things were. Regardless, Im offline & the app is still crashing, can't imagine when its actually cross talking to the unit. At this point I'd need to see some real solid user reviews before pulling the trigger.

QU-app: Havent played with the app yet but its limited to ONE Ipad control of the board... a separate QU-YOU personal monitor app allows 7 people to control their monitor mix but thats it. Makes me hesitate to get the QU-PAC now... I'd like to have my father in law control some levels out in the crowd but also have the guitar able to have full access to the board too like he does now. Id need the QU-16 to do that.

CAN THE X32 BE FULLY CONTROLLED BY MORE THAN 1 DEVICE?

Theres a bunch of X32 apps, either Behringer or Mixing Station for Android. I'm gonna play around with that one next

Waves is officially moving away from "Native" pricing to "Soundgrid" on March 1st
Good news for Soundgrid as all these digital mixers support it in one form or another.

Plugins for Live Sound | Waves

I haven't seen support announced for xr18 but I do expect it to be supported just like x32
When it does, it will be a no-brainer for me.
Same Plug-ins used for both studio and live


And this is also One step closer to Take your favorite plugin on a thumb drive to hand the FOH engineer on large gigs.
i.e. You own a license, you can take and use it anywhere, on any gig.

yes it can...used my x32 with 2 android devices (phone and tablet) plus a win7 laptop running x32-Edit. All 3 stayed connected until we overloaded the circuit with the amps which shut down everything. Mixing Station is a great little app but it's definitely better on a tablet, the buttons are a bit small on my phone. Haven't tried the Apple version but I heard it works well also.

Appreciate the response... quick question. If the app shuts down in the middle of the playing, when you reopen the app does it go back to where you were? In the offline mode when the app crashes you start from scratch!

The apps go to wherever the board is when you connect to it. The x32 is constantly auto-saving itself, I think every couple seconds (not sure about the exact time). So when the board comes back up it returns to it's last auto save config. When we recovered from our amp shutdown and powered back up, everything was the same except for the mains ( which I have set to zero out on power down.)

Have you ever had the apps fail on any device? The X-air app closes on me often

I've had them disconnect after a long period of disuse, but never on a gig where I'm constantly fussing with them. At home I use various devises as wireless remotes for the board. Sometimes I'll have 3-4 connected at a time depending on what I'm doing. If a devise goes to sleep or a call comes in, sometimes I'll lose the connection. Real quick and easy to connect up again.

I have read about guys having connection problems in room with a lot of cell phones turned on, as they're all constantly pinging your router. Hasn't happened to me yet though.

Those are very cool.
What bums me out is that the recording is over Firewire. Firewire is great, but it means you have to bring a Mac to the gig if you want to record. Otherwise you could build a rackmount PC with a firewire card in it. I don't think you can get a Windows laptop with firewire and enough horsepower to do anything useful.

It's too bad because their dedicated recording interface, the 1818VSL does record over USB2 and works great with a Windows laptop.

Firewire is being replaced by Thunderbolt, which is backward-compatible with an adapter. If you're a Mac person, that's not a problem it's a good thing.
If you're a Windows or Linux person, your choices for a laptop with Firewire or Thunderbolt are ... slim.
You can get PCIe Firewire cards to add to a Windows or Linux box, but not a laptop.
I checked out prices for rack-mount Windows PCs with Firewire. These guys sell them:

Their rackmount systems start at about $2000 with a 1TB hard drive and a firewire 800.
Well I just noticed they have a firewire-equipped laptop, though even at the base configuration it's $1600.

I guess the gold standard for Winfolk would be a 2-U rack-mounted PC with Firewire card with whatever hard drive you want running Windows 8 with a big touchscreen monitor on top.
That would be crazy expensive unless you bought parts and built it yourself. I've thought about it.

I guess I'm lucky in a way, my Presonus 1818VSL with 8-pre expansion unit does most of what the new RM units do, and outputs to USB2.
I can hook that up to a $600 touchscreen laptop in tent mode and it's good to go.
