Dim outlook from aging punk rockers

Generally speaking, very few (if any) among the "old punk rock stars" as you call them, got into punk with a positive world view in the first place. Punk in that older form is a genre built on cynicism, anger and just plain NEGATIVE WAVES as Oddball would say. That the survivors have turned out like they have, as the world has largely turned out as bad as they expected and they have succumbed to it exactly how they feared they would, should be no surprise at all.
As for Sid and Nancy, I cringe whenever I hear them referenced in any sort of romantic context. Like that damn song "Butterfly" says, "Me and you like Sid and Nancy" -- so you want a relationship like two dysfunctional abusive addicts in which he murders her and kills himself? Same thing with Romeo and Juliet; the tale of a 16yo street thug grooming a 13yo girl that ends up with six people dead. If that's everyone's romantic vision, no wonder domestic abuse and divorce are at all time highs. Bah.

The belief that "cancel culture" is only practiced by one "side" requires remarkably myopic vision.
the only thing a person needs to have a depressing world view is a pulse and any sense of perception at all. that having been said, my negative (aka realistic) world view doesn't temper my positive attitude.
i think it's called consequence culture. actions have consequences; i think it's a refreshing change.
The Minutemen thread makes me feel good inside. This one make me feel :sad:
I would say that's a world view shared by a lot of people (rightly or wrongly), not just aging punks.
This is a fundamental problem in the world: we have a shortage of mature adults.
But to counter your argument: Terry Chimes was the original drummer for The Clash (under the stage name Tory Crimes). He was replaced by the great Topper Headon. Terry went on to become a chiropractor and built the largest chiropractor network in Britain and he's now a gazillionaire.
This is a fundamental problem in the world: we have a shortage of mature adults.

I owned the first couple DYS records and knew some of those people. The most recent one seems pretty awful, but I'm sure he still has his fans.

I was in London in 2019 and meant to go to East London and leave a note at the reception desk asking Terry if he'd join me for an after work beer. But I got too busy doing family things. Next time I'm in London, I'm going to do that. In true Clash form, I would bet he'll have a beer with me.
If you knew some of those Boston punk people, I did and still do. Dave Aaronson, good friend of mine and founding member of Jerry's Kids, died a few months ago. Chris Dougherty is also in pretty bad shape. Just passing along some info.

I do. Chris was recently at Bob's house on the North Shore and Bob passed on that he is doing pretty good. I didn't know Dave at all, but Jerry's Kids was the first punk show I ever saw in 81 at the Mill Hill Club on the Cape. Sorry for your loss.
I think of Punk as a natural reaction to the increasing impact of virtuosity in rock music. The Sex Pistols, The Ramones made that irrelevant. DIY, like they say. By the way, David Johansen, as best I can tell, is quite the cheery guy, as is Iggy.

Yup. Bob still plays in various bands on the regular. We both live on the North Shore. I have been at least a casual acquaintance with a bunch of the older Boston punk people, cuz I'm old and went to shows in the 80's. Bob has recrded with friends of mine and plays in a band with some friends. Jerry's Kids was a big influence on my hardcore band from Upstate NY called The Catatonics.
Last time I heard about what Bob was doing was 20 years ago he had this Sci-fi Rockabilly thing. I forget the name of it, but it was cool. He had this fanzine that he made up with references to Dr. Smith and The Robot. Don't know Bob that well. But he is, as they say in MA, a 'charactuh.'
