DiMarzio's Billy Sheehan 'Relentless' pickups

Has anyone tried these with an active preamp? I just happened to order an Audere preamp on Monday. Now while looking at replacement pups, I find this. But everyone talks about how hot they are. Has me wondering if I should just put the preamp aside for now or go ahead and run the preamp with the relentless. I've got an older active PJ and wasn't a fan of the factory preamp.

Audere preamps are unity gain. That means they won’t boost the volume when set flat. But they will give you impressive tone shaping abilities.
hmmm... i already had the relentless pups in the shopping cart. so you are saying i won't piss off my sound guy coming in way to hot... basically the audere will tone shape but no boost?

Do you think it would be a good combo? Or should I do one or the other?

Yes.

Yes.

Your choice. With a transparent preamp like the Audere, the character of the tone comes from the pickup(s). The Audere just lets you shape that tone.

Thank you for the input... i also read that audere works with active pickups. not that these are active, but it looks like a very versatile pre. once again, thanks for the help!

How does it balance with the Relentless middle ? I have a PJ that currently has the GZR PJ set installed. I’m planning on installing the Relentless middle but I’m pretty sure the GZR J is going to be too quiet.
the relentless tends to over power everything, this serves as a HPF by just taking a little off the bottom when both are engaged, there is no mid dip with both full up. I like the Alumitone with about 30% of the relentless engaged as well. The relentless by itself is great. can't wait to hear it in a mix next week

One thing I’m learning with the relentless paired with the other pickup is I have to roll off the bridge slightly to get a deeper sound from it. Then I can roll the relentless back into it.
Relentless by itself is bad@$$
Relentless mixed with the alumitone full and rich sound. Alumitone by itself is pretty cool but I like my Nordstrand warm and wooly Jazz bridge better

I am reeeeeally looking forward to seeing this on his channel. I live that P pickup, and am very interested in hearing paired up with others.

Agreed. I always look forward to Lobster's new videos; just as I always used to look forward to Ed Friedland's Bass Whisperer videos that are now infrequent, but much appreciated if they're made.

If interested, I talk about the challenges Carl Pedigo at Lakland tackled, and the further work that I performed to get a phase issue and volume imbalance corrected here: NBD: Heavily Mod’d Lakland 44-51 (Lipsticks, Relentless, EMG)

3 Pickup Bass Phase Issue Questions

In short, volume discrepancies when using the Relentless (because it’s super loud) will be a problem. I remedied it with 2 outputs and an active mixer pedal. I sent the mixer pedal with the bass to Lobster.
