I love that burst/colour and it is one of my top contenders if I were to spec out a custom. I wouldn't do it over a spalted top though and I would need more contrast on the fretboard markers.
There are certain aspects I prefer on the Afterburners and others on the Z's. I like the thicker (back to front) necks on the Afterburner. I prefer the non-tilt back headstock (just a visual/feel thing) too. I think I prefer the body shape and curves of the Z basses. They are both fine instruments though.
Yep, that made my boxers a whole lot tighter in the crotch region.
I do really like that curve. It makes me happy...
So - lets mix it up for you. We know your answer to AB vs Z. What about AB vs. Retro Voodoo?
For some odd reason, this is the first time I realized there were inlays in there. I guess I always saw it before at a distance.
The cello hip really does it for me...anybody know if Dingwall will do retro Voodoo's like that these days? Not that I'm going to put in an order anytime soon, but the Z vs Retro Voodoo choice would probably cause me some sleepless nights if it was an option.
This very bass was at the last NAMM show in January, so that should tell you something.

Love it!!! It’s awesome. I’d choose the newer styling myself but if offered a chance at owning a cello hip as long as the other specs where in order I’d take it as well.

The voodoo cut has been a body shape option that was on the table for a long time. There was an upcharge, but they had the template when I ordered mine.
Here's a pic from when we were working of figuring out top-woods:
I'm really glad that they're bringing it back though, but I'm biased. The Voodoo is really close to the modern Zebra shape...I know this because we recut one would-be Rastaburst that didn't quite work out into a regular Zebra without too much trouble.
I haven't given Sheldon a hard time yet...but the body decal isn't quite dead on. The original says "Dingwall Designer Guitars" and not just Dingwall.
. Although I've found in having one from the original production run, the body decal is divisive for lots of players. It was probably the right move to eventually move most of the branding to headstock or backplate.It plays exactly like a traditional Zebra. And actually the newer one has the arm contour, which is really comfy. The Rastaburst was the first one with that. At the time it was being built, Sheldon mentioned that he spent a whole lot of time and effort (and I assume it was hand work) in getting that contour with the hipcut right...that the geometry was tricky...and only then he sorta realized that that's because they never did that on the old ones.
I recently bought the NG2 wrench kit from dingwall.
the set is labelled as follows:
Truss rod wrench: 4mm
Bridge wrench: 1/16"
Knob wrench: 2mm
Pickup wrench: 2.5mm
I note that four keys isn't what's shown in the dingwall online store, and that a truss rod wrench which was a large righ angle with a ball end (as shown) would be way more useful for adjusting the action than the regular-shaped no ball-end wrench that is actually what was sent out. I've just emailed Dingwall to ask about that.

I'm on the fence about adding an ABZ4 to the stable. Anyone with experience of Dingwalls below 5 strings in that form factor?
I have a Super PJ4. I love it because there are some songs that don't always need a 5. I've often thought about a longer scale 4 for that reason. Love the long scale, still like to play a 4 once in a while. Ask any questions...

I have had an ABZ 4-string for years. I have an AB4 as well. Both of mine are older though, from a time when Dingwall 4s were pretty rare. Not much to say other than they are Dingwalls without a B string. Anything particular you were curious about?
I'm pretty comfortable with parallel-fretted 4-string basses, and have been gradually spending more time playing 5s with a medium or long scale Dingwall 5 (otherwise a 35" scale parallel). I'm curious how people find the long scale 4-string to play and in tone when restricted to a 4-string approach to pieces (without the crazy cool B)
