I wonder if they'll make a 5-string D-bird, check this one out:

I actually discussed the non-NG Combustions with Jesse at Ish when I was in. He's still trying to get a handle on the models, variations and meanings...but yeah, I told him that some of the newer Combustions in the trans-burst finishes would do well for him.

Curious for myself, as the finish on my old P bass's maple neck has been starting to lift/wear through. I don't mind, it's just mojo and makes it more unique, but I'd like to make sure I'm looking after it.

This was conventional wisdom with the older maple necks that were oil/wax finished. I think that once Sheldon moved to the thin poly finish on necks, that advice changed. That's what was suggested and what I did with my old Afterburner.

No, don't use the wax on the wenge. If you've got one of the older oil/wax finished maple necks use it on the back, not on the fretboard.

I got it in January and started gigging with it in February. It's got a lot of miles on it now. But yeah, the obverse of having a super thin poly finish is that it wears pretty easily.

I did wonder about that myself. I realized for the first time when I posted this that Sheldon had really only stated that with reference to the neck, and did not expressly include the fingerboard in his statement. I'm usually pretty observant of these minor details, but missed that entirely at the time.

So maybe he will chime in on that at some point.

That weird place where you're more comfortable playing in a room in the 100's or 1000's rather than 10's seated and intent on listening hard. :/ Of course part of the tweak is doing it in super clean studio sound and knowing it'll be broadcast. At least our trainwrecks have gotten less wrecky over the years. ;)

Standards are made in China like the Combustion line, they're passive, etc. while the 'Custom' are shop built with all that entails. Also note the Standards don't have the wood pickguard, some of the other optioned woods, the headstock veneer and inlay, etc.

Ahhh... Thanks. So if I see a Dbird for sale new ~$4K that's a custom?

Yes. I haven't reviewed the 2018 pricelist lately, but IIRC the 'standard' will be commensurate with the NG-ish offerings. Of course, you should be able to tell by how it's outfitted and optioned as well. Standard models won't have the flexibility in build.

From what I can see, active electronics are not available even in Customs.

FWIW my Canadian D-Bird is passive. My understanding was that they are all passive.
I guess I'm willing to let it go if somebody out there just has to have a purple D-Bird with a wenge neck.

Question: the Combustion works on 2 9V batteries, and I've always learned that the battery's drained as soon as there's a cable in the output. Is that also the case when I switch the bass to passive? Would save a LOT of batteries:rolleyes:
