Mine is early enough in the release (actually was an NG-2 that the shop 3'd for me once it came from the factory...so it has the standard 3X switch so that it does Bridge/Middle series and Bridge/Neck Parallel. Totally works for me.

My 'shop' Dingwalls have all had fantastic fretwork (Voodoo-Prima, AB1, Zebra/Voodoo) and I have 2 Chinese made Dingwalls, the first, the NG3 was still as good or better than any production bass I've had, and had action that was actually lower than my others. The other Combustion I pulled the frets...but the luthier who did my work, who normally works in the high-end orchestral instrument world, made note to me that the fret installation was very well executed and made his work of removing and filling easy.

I had this conversation with Sheldon a few years back on my old AB. He said the wear that I had sent him pictures of was completely normal. I assumed it was excessive especially as I had been working it hard for quite some time. He said. “Nope. All good, unless you are hearing anything concerning do not stress the fact you see the lines.”

Beyond this you get into fret hardening. This is wear the fret material becomes more hardened and with this the wear minimizes any further through the life on the frets.

Ie if you had your frets dressed to reduce the “gouging”, in theory it should not wear as significantly again over the same period of time.

Yeah, having the option of neck/bridge parallel is really nice. Although I've really come to enjoy the Bridge/Middle-series setting, I wasn't sure I was going to take to it but I find it has plenty of lows for what I need but a bit more clarity than a standard Z1 Neck/Bridge-series setting. Thinking of moving the pickups in the fretless combustion to the Z2/NG2 layout as well.

In engineering terms this is called 'work hardening', & occurs with most metals.

I am also really liking just the neck pup on my Z3.
