Well, I can only say that given I gigged and recorded fretless back in the 90's for a few projects and in all my conversations with other players and instructors that there's a whole lot of nonsense about fretless players in the world. I've also had enough of dudes who slide and vibrato their notes to cover up being out of tune. So, having a bass that's accurately intonated is the best way to play in tune no matter how comfortable you are with the instrument. There's so much sloppy fretless playing in the world that it generally gives the instrument a bad name with other performers.

I have a couple of long scale 5's and a Super J (PJ), I don't think a 5 string P would make your AB superfluous as they do different things even with the same number of strings, in fact, one of each compliment each other quite well. But if you feel the need for a 4 then go for a 4.
My personal issue is that I have an ABZ and Combustion that do the same thing and I find myself leaning toward the medium scale even if the string spacing is a bit wide, I strongly prefer 18mm. The longer scales a little bit of stretch on a couple tracks with one of my bands. It's not that I can't play those songs on the 37's, it's that I can't play certain passages without shifting positions which annoys me.

I've recently put in an order for a Super P5 for similar reasoning to you as well as just the general leaning toward medium scale, I want something simple, I love the P sound (every bass has a p-tone) and I have also been going back and forth on ordering one for about 5 years (oh how I wish I'd ordered when they were cheaper). Once it is here I'll see what feels like it should stay and what feels like it should go.

On the colour, all I can say is never put tort on sonic blue, ever :p

Well, it sounds like you have taken the first step in realizing that you must have a SuperP. I was perfectly satisfied with the Dingwalls I was playing when Sheldon introduced the SuperP. It didn't take very long for me to realize that I had to try one. I went with the single split pickup and four strings because that spells "Precision Bass" to me and I already had a killer five-string. I wish you the best of luck deciding on all of the details on your new build. :) I don't see a SP5 replacing your ABHS either, but I will say that my favorite pick guard to go with sonic blue would be black abalone. Unfortunately, this was not an option when I ordered mine. For some reason Barry (Dingwall sales rep at the time) shot down my idea of sending them a blank to use, so I had John Kallas craft one for me. I need to take a better picture of the Super Perfect P that Sheldon & crew made for me:

Thanks for both your inputs. On the subway ATM, will reply more thoroughly at home.

BTW, remember that I started my Dingwall journey on a Super P5, so I'm well aware of its capabilities. I definitely see the point about tort on sonic blue, might be too dark. Parchment or mint/vintage white would go better. LPB demands tort, however!

I have considered the opposite. If I go with wenge neck, I'd go with wenge FB as well. I just love how tort looks with maple boards. When going for a Super series bass, I want the vintage tone woods.

I'm debating on placing an order for a SP5 or a SJ5 3x...tough decision x.x

Well mister “I’m obsessing over pink all the time”.... do I smell a fart in a wind storm? Lol. Just buggin ya. But now your going for left field blue!!!
Just a thought but you did mention 19mm spacing and to keep in mind a 4 string long scale is 19mm spacing if you do go that route.
Also, by my calculations Dingwall price increase is approximately 6.7% for 2019. Just putting that out there.
Good luck with whatever you do. I can relate. Especially with long build times I find it can be very easy to often think Optional variations to an original order placed months prior.

Well, what can I say? I've been known to change my mind on a whim (pronounced huwim). As much as the shock value of pink intrigues me, it might get old quick. Better to go with a classic colour combo! Sonic Blue and Tort would still very much be "me". Bright and colourful.

Oh I completely understand. About 3 years ago I was so indecisive about some build specs so between that and money I had to back out of a build que.
I wish I knew then what I know now. But I do know I was a PITA for Dingwall for a few months as, with all the time I had to think about it, I kept “modifying” my build spec.

OTOOH (on the other OTHER hand), I could just split the difference and order a candy pink Super P5 with wenge neck... :D
