About a year ago, I picked up a Peavey Cirrus four string. It’s a really nice bass. Mint condition with original case, case candy, and probably even original, (horrible, stiff, heavy) strings. It needed strings, a set up, and some minor wiring repairs. Probably why it was a twenty year old case queen. Neck is really nice, and I think it could take an even lower setup, if I filed the bottom of the saddle blocks a bit.

It was kind of an impulse purchase, and I’m into it for right at $800. It scratches the longscale, active bass itch. Three band preamp, active pickups, 35” scale, and a beautiful quilted redwood top. Weighs 8.5 lb. I was surprised at the quality, but I guess this was Peavey’s flagship.

It has been about ten years since the last “straight” bass. I can really feel and hear the difference the multi scale basses make. Especially, since I switch off with the Super P. The 35” scale makes the Peavey’s E and A shine, but the D and G are a bit weaker. Tonally, the Peavey is more modern, active sounding, while the Super P is does what a Super P is supposed to do.

The Peavey is less ergonomic than my AB-1’s. Longer reach to the nut on the Peavey. Still, a great bass that has some cool tones. A Mississippi Alembic.

I’m keeping an eye out for a used, four string, NG, or better yet, AB-1. I want to stay with the 19mm string spacing, and it needs to be light, under 8 lb if possible. Passive would be fine. Waiting for the used market prices to soften. (Might be a long wait)

Nice! I'd guess that it was probably the ABZ 5/3 that I cancelled. I had two 5/3s on order(along with a 4/3 and a 6/3)and I decided that I really didn't need two of them, so I cancelled one of them a couple of weeks ago. He probably just kept the order in to have one, so that's pretty cool! We might be getting our ABZs around the same time! :thumbsup:;)

Even when my Dingwalls arrive, I'll continue to play and gig my F Bass BNF5, and I'm planning on picking up a couple of Spector Euro LTs for an 80s band we're forming. The Dingwalls will be my weapons of choice for my main gig, though...:bassist:

I ordered a Brice Defiant from Rondo last year with the same scale as a Combustion. I played it a few days before returning it. Just didn't come close to measuring up. It would have been an interesting mod platform at that price, but in the end I decided it would be too much work and effort to get it where I wanted it to be.

Maybe you've seen this already, but in this video the Cirrus and the Dingwall pretty much stomp all over everything else. The LeFay sounds good as well, but really the Cirrus might sound the best.

Yeah, they are incredibly underrated. Honestly I'd never hear of Dingwall before watching this video. I was stuck playing guitar for a couple of decades. I watched the video looking for Cirrus videos. Became obsessed with the Dingwall after watching this, but the Cirrus holds up to those others incredibly well. I'm late to the party on everything but what can you do. Someday I'll get a combustion.

In this example, the Cirrus definitely sounded on a par with Dingwall & Le Fay, the two disappointments
were the Warwick & surprisingly the MM. Who would have thunked it.
