I want to do the same to my combustion when it arrives, so I'm very interested in hearing how it turns out!

By the way, a few pages back were some discussion regarding the rotaries on the new NG's and combustions and whether they would have the Dbird schematic, so I emailed Dingwall and:

the 3X is the standard bridge/bridge-neck*P/bridge-middle*S/neck

As I expected the combustion stays with the original wiring, I'm surprised to hear the NG is getting it too, though.

I'm sort of not surprised. It definitely differentiates the models and I think the 3X is more fitting on the Combustion models even moreso than the NG's.

My NG-3 had a 3X switch installed by the shop on the way through from China and I'm not at all sad about that decision.

My NG3 is due this May, I have all the wiring diagrams for both types of PU selector, just in case I need to install a 3X.
It seems a chance that it will already have a 3X, so is it easy to identify a DB or 3X switch? i.e. is a part number on the back of the switch?

They are marked on the back, but without unscrewing anything just tap the poles and see which pickups are activated. Very easy to tell.

Now that is where I've got you beat, Jeff.
At 10 lb. 15 oz., my Sandberg will stop a bullet. Not sure you can make the same claim. ;-)

For those with long scale 4 string Dingwalls - what is the optimal way to tune BEAD? Do you buy the 5 string sets and use the 37" B string on the 36.25" scale string? Or do you do something else?

Depends on what strings you use, if you're only using standard strings then yes what you suggest is easiest. Other string manufacturers sell singles which is less wasteful.

I kind of assumed this would be the case. Some people can rock that style of playing but I’ve never been one of them which is why I think it’s highly doubtful I’ll ever own one. My bass sits completely above my belt line. Just seems awkward with a d bird

Mandatory. It puts you in a different headspace too when you're in rock mode. Give it a shot.

You can raise it up high, it's not a huge deal. If you're playing finger style its perfectly comfortable that way. I find if you play with a pick it's more awkward up high as it pushes your elbow out a bit and can make the right arm reach almost feel like playing an acoustic.
I suspect the shape of the player has a lot of influence over where this one feels comfortable though as it's not an ergonomic shape by any means (i'm taking about the flat shape, the contours are great). Being very much un-svelte and using it in my 100% pick for everything band I have it pretty low

Being a Mott the Hoople fan, I always figured thigh high platform boots were required to rock a TBird.

Once I find the right pair, I’ll decide on finish colors.

I Definitely agree with some of the above. The D-Bird, almost, demands being slung low. I also agree that the players body shape may play a fairly significant role in how comfortable the Bird is. I’m not super fat, but I’m definitely out of shape(I guess “dad bod” would be an apt description- ), as a result, if I wear the Bird in my normal playing position, it tilts away from me. If I wear it any higher, it feels, and looks, awkward.

I feel like there are 5 basic choices with the D-Bird and us out-of-shape dudes:
(From least effort to most)
1. Do nothing about our physical shape. Play the thing where you normally play it, and just accept that it is gonna feel awkward playing a Bird.
2. Do nothing about our physical shape, but alter where the Bird hangs, thus changing our playing style.
3. Do something about our physical shape. Play the thing where you normally play it, and enjoy the Bird and your better shape.
4. Do something about our physical shape AND alter where the Bird hangs. It’ll change your playing style, but you may not care, since you’re now so good looking, that even guitar players want to be you.
5. Don’t buy a D-Bird. I debated on whether this was #1 or #5. Seems like it would be a #1, but that means not buying a Dingwall that totally ROCKSbassist

I’m gonna give #4 a serious try. I’d like to feel better about my appearance and even though I’m not a huge metal fan beyond 80’s hair metal, I am starting to enjoy watching some of the up and coming metal guys. I think Rob Van Der Loo just looks cool with his D-Bird slung low...

So, I’m off to renew my gym membership.
