One of my SJ5's is down at Mo's shop for some work. I am having Mo convert the bass from a straight ahead SJ5 to a SP\J5, as well as install Luminlay sidemarkers. I am soooooo looking forward to having this wonderful playing bass back in my hands!

Don't forget that you can change any of the 3 pickups to be parallel or series wired and if the NG3 "DB" selector pickup assignments are not to your liking, a "3X" switch can be popped in.

The 3x will give Bridge, Bridge & Middle, Bridge & Neck, Neck. This is my pref. but it is beleived the NG3 is now getting the 3x from factory, so I'm holding off until mine lands.

Incidently, I only went NG3 because one was already on order, I also think the two pickups is a slightly more pleasing look, I guess we more used to seeing it.

Gorgeous bass! I'm loving the look of the D-bird, and am seriously tempted to pick one up for BEAD in my rock band.

The one turn-off for me is the "pickguard" the just looks kind of like a stick-on decal, at least in pictures. Does it look the same way in person? Is it removable, or is there a "real" pickguard replacement available, like what seems to be on the custom version?

It sounds darker than the NG-2 for sure. Splendid pick sound, and plays really nice. Those bridge pieces are kinda sharp though, gotta be careful not to damage the bag when putting it back in. Sliding it in with the bag half open is definitely not recommended.

It's a vinyl decal, I'm sure it would come off with some heat or whatever you would use to remove stickers. I'm not going to try on mine as I like the look myself.
You could replace it with a wood veneer very easily, there are no screw holes so a stick on veneer would work well.

I think it looks great, much better than the wooden thingies on the canadian ones. It seems to be a paper thin vinyl sticker.

On one hand, I agree with ya', 100%! The NG-3 is just a fantastic beast! It's crazy flexible, and, out of the box, it was instantly comfortable and playable. I didn't hafta adjust anything. Live, I'm rocking position #4-all pickups on(same on my D-Bird Standard), and it just sounds so massive! It is an XLNT bang for the buck...

OTOH, I canNOT wait for my ABZs! I don't expect them to sound radically different from my NG-3(I ordered the ABZs with the D-Bird switch), but having previously owned a v1 Combustion and an ABZ5, I can tell you that the Canadian basses just have that THING that super high end gear has.

I'm planning on keeping the NG-3 after the ABZs arrive, but we shall see...:thumbsup:

Has anyone upgraded their NG-2 to a NG-3 using the "official" upgrade kit? I have a question regarding the pickup wiring, everything else is pretty much self explanatory. The kit has a sheet inside describing the process. Last sentece: "Solder green and black together on each pickup."

The single pickup that came with the kit already has that done, it has the following leads:

- red
- white
- clear
- green and black as one, isolated


The NG-2 stock pickups look different, both are:

- black and white as one
- red and greed as one
- a thicker black one (clear?)


I have both the DB and the 3X switch and want to put in the 3x. Can anyone help with the pickups leads? If I read the instructions correctly I need to break up the black/white and red/green leads on the exisiting pickups. Why is that? I like knowing what the effect is.

I've moved the existing NG-2 pickups from bridge/middle to middle/neck and put the new pickup in the bridge position.

Here are the instruction sheet and a pic of the different leads

Really diggin' these basses! They sound amazing, and they're fun to look at! It makes for a fun night's work.

Just for reference sake, nothing sitting on top of my cab has anything to do with my sound, that's my IEM rig(Shure wireless, Denon mixer, Carvin power strip). This is my bass rig...

Top row is always on. The rest is salt and pepper, but I get to leave it all on, thanks to the ES-5! I'm thinking about replacing the Ampeg with a Bergantino HG cab, either a 410 or a 412. I may wait until after my ABZs show up...:thumbsup:;)
