You guys all rock! (Cue the music so I stop thanking people).

My Lakland is sold. My Sadowsky is as good as sold and will now look for a Z3. I learned from you guys that you cannot stop at 1 Dingwall, after all.View attachment 3414544

I'm so glad you finally connected with a fine Dingwall. That is a beautiful burst! I love the interesting grain near the controls. :cool: The tort caps it - vintage/modern perfection. I've never played a SJ with FD-3's (mine has Super Fatties). I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions of its tonal palette. :) Welcome to the club and enjoy playing the frets off of it!

The people at Graphtech were solid; friendly, with good communication, but it killed about a week as they had to verify my purchase and work through the situation. They've now sent out replacements. It'll be a bummer because Mo will have to pull the bridge apart and some of the wiring and re-do the saddles...but almost there.

Do you know what kind of strings it came with? They don't look like Dingwall strings

I have no idea what strings they are. It was traded in at L&M so I don't know if they are strings the original owner put on or if the store switched them. I will be ordering a few sets from Dingwall. I will do a setup on it as the string height does not have a curved shape. The B-E-A-D strings are all at the same height with the G string a little lower. I find the B string to be a little quieter than the others and bridge (saddle) screws seem to all be out quite a bit. The intonation seems pretty good by ear but I will do a full set up once I have the new strings.

Once you get your set up done don’t forget to check the pick up heights after your action is where you want it.
A couple turns on the pick up height screws can make a big difference in sounds and you don’t want them too close IMO.

Yup. I watched Sheldon's videos a few times and will watch them again as I'm doing every step. It's great to have his specific specs readily available. :)

Definitely. Passive basses can have those issues. I've heard it with both faulty volume controls and tone controls. That's why a lot of boutique brands have started using active buffers to passive tone controls.

My SJ might have that :crying: I put DR Dragon Skins 4 days ago and they sound like dead flats now. Quite strange considering they're coated strings. I've been noticing some dullness of tone as of late, too.

First step would be removing the knobs to see if there's any rust or oxidation. Both can usually be fixed quite easily with some elbow grease. If that does not work, you may need to have a tech go through them.

Just putting a note in here before I list, I have a big house bill coming up so I need to let go of my recently acquired Super P5.
Drop me a message if anyone is looking, especially if you're within few hours drive of Ottawa (I hate shipping basses).

Luckily my 'wait meter' is calibrated to the super high end of the scale, so this isn't even registering. :beaver:

...also, I've mastered the art of taking a bass that cost me $900 and turning that into 3x the number...and 1.5x that in end value. :atoz: But, I never ever focus on resale value on any bass I buy, customize or spec. It's all about what I want to play, hear and see.

If they're new strings that you don't have experience with I'd be hedging my bets here. Do they feel like dead flats now? Do they still feel lively and sound lively when not amplified?

Sweep those pots back and forth to see if it springs back to life...sometimes they get dirty and/or get worn in spots. There's cleaner that you can use, but then, potentiometers are also cheap when it comes to replacing.

It's been happening with several set of strings, but I just thought about it now because these are coated. I checked the sound spectrum on Logic and there's pretty much nothing happening above 1k

If not your tone control, it could be the capacitor that bleeds the treble off with the potentiometer assuming its a standard treble bleed type circuit.

The tone control has had some crackling since I bought the SJ and the input jack makes some noises when the cables moves in a particular direction.
I'll take it to my tech
