Can you describe the tone of the NBSingles, please ? How do they compare to the current Combustion FD3's ?
Been thinking about rolling Pups. Others may well be interested, too.

I don't have a Combustion with the FD3s, so I can't compare them (although I have had one on order since the beginning of the year - only 6 months to go!). I could record something but it will take me a few days.

The sound is like a Jazz Bass to the tenth degree, if that helps at all. Articulate, loud, a bit trebly and aggressive, but not in a bad way. I prefer them in passive mode.

I see going totally ampless as the future for acts that are getting pro level front of house sound support. At least for everybody except guitar players, who will insist that without the fragile, heavy, vintage tube amp they are lost. Or maybe not, even guitarists evolve and get tired of heavy gear that needs constant maintenance. (Ok, not blues guys)

Think how simple backline for a festival would be. Send your settings. Or bring your laptop, interface and di in a bag. Plug into the wireless. Super clean stages that don’t look like a music store used amp display.

Overall sound wont be compromised by stage volumes. You get what you want at comfort levels in ear. Maybe I’m dreaming.

For the rest of us weekend warriors, it’ll still be schlepping enough amp to carry the room, unless there’s a significant investment in upgrading the two speakers on a stick “pa”. Uneven sound out front, beaming guitar amps, vocals barely making it over the top...bass waves piling up at the back of the room

The parallax looks pretty awesome for less than half the cost of a decent distortion pedal. The Arrow interface is pretty badass, too.

I’ll keep playing around with my HD500x. After a year, it’s replaced all the boutique pedals, and I dig my sound. I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. Not bad for $300 used. I’d be super stoked if Line6 added some Darkglass fx to the HD500x platform, but they probably will keep that for the newer product lines.

It's been my experience -- both playing with, supporting, and running local modeler community (~450 people strong now, with meetups every few months ish) -- that guitarists (especially rock/metal, but other genres as well) are picking up on modeling at a much higher rate than bassists. I think due in large part to bassists not getting quite as much value out of them as guitarists, since bassists don't traditionally use as many FX and expansive pedalboards. My last two bands, and my current project, are "ampless" entirely, though we're still saddled with acoustic drums, which dictate some level of increased volume.

Just bite the bullet and get an HX LT or HX Stomp. It has a BK7 in there. IMO, if you can splurge on the guitar you play (a Dingwall) why cut corners on your board?

When they hit the used market at about 50% of retail, I’ll be looking into them.

There’s always the latest and greatest, and then there’s “good enough”.

After a while one becomes the other for a lot less dough.

Heck, I know folks that buy expensive basses and balk at buying strings.

The Dingwalls are in a class by themselves. Buying used, I’ve been able to own six, so far. The four I’ve sold recouped the price I paid, minus minor expenses. The two I have presently are simply a better fit, four strings, and very light weight.

I’ve had a number of Darkglass pedals come and go the same way. Wait a while, and they’ll be affordable, and easy to sell for the same price if they don’t rock my world. Catch and release. I liked the pedals, but not enough to keep them.

The HD500x won it’s spot and replaced all my individual pedals, save the Smoothie compressor. For what I’m doing with it, it’s a better fit. And I’ve barely scratched the surface. Heck, I’m not even doing double amp models yet. Im sure I could mix up an Ampeg hiwatt recombinant dna thing with spice that’ll be cool.

Just researching how the Parallax works gave me ideas, like compression on the bottom end, high pass, and gain on the top end. There is endless exploration to do. And I’d have to do the same with the new unit.

Sorry, the Parallax is not even close to the Axe-Fx system (unless Parallax has drastically changed in the past 3 months or so, since I gave up on it in favor of going back to Fractal). I've owned multiple Axe-Fx setups (currently waiting on my III), and have used Parallax a ton as well.

Why do you want an overdrive when your HX Stomp has a boatload and then a whole host of amp overdrives? Just use that and save your $150.
My preference is the fliptop and the 610 cab sim for a light overdrive.

I’ve just started exploring the filter eqs on my HD500x. Really tightens up the lows. The Ampeg amp model does nice driven tones.

The bassman normal is cool too.

There’s got to be something hiding in there someplace.

Cool thanks. What made you do this rout instead of X7 or Line 6 HX Stomp route ?
I love the tones you can get with software but I’m always sketchy about trying it live. Has been reliable ?

At the most basic level all you’d need is a laptop, interface, and DI.

My DI and interface will be living in a slide out rack shelf, secured with dual lock Velcro, alongside a backup analog pedal rig.

My wireless plugs directly into the interface, interface to laptop and DI.

Part of my problem is that I really LOVE new tech, LOL! @MDBass, do you run the Arrow to the MacBook AND the DI or to the laptop, and out of the laptop to the DI? What DI are you using?

Arrow to laptop & DI: the Arrow is essentially functioning as the preamp.

I’m using an RNDI, but will have a Q/Strip on hand as well just in case there’s an issue with the phantom power.

I’d recommend either the Teemah! or the Fliptop amp in your HX Stomp: you have a TON of OD possibilities there without spending cash on another pedal.

Yeah those are 2 great sounds in the HX Stomp.

Honestly, for super heavy tones Parallax makes the X7 sound like a toy, and I LOVE the X7.

Same with the Stomp: there might be a way for the Stomp to get closer to this level of tone, but it would require a LOT more tweaking.

Dialing in this sound on Parallax took just a few minutes.

The Stomp is also a computer, and I trust my MacBook and it’s multi core processor to remain stable even more than I’d trust the smaller processor in the Stomp: essentially I’m now running an Axe FX rack system onstage with the added benefit of a big screen and better UI.

This conversion really started with needing to upgrade my wireless to a rack unit: my GLXD has been great, but it had some dropout issues on the last arena run I did due to operating in the Bluetooth frequency band.

Once my wireless and pedals were living in a rack case, this next step only seemed logical given the tonal advantages: I was already bringing my laptop and Arrow on the road with me for work anyway.

I tried the demo this afternoon , having mid and high distortion control , plus the being able to visualize the x over points ..... sooo easy to dial great sounds!!
Yeah I want this live. !!

If Darkglass does am ultra version of x7 they should include the separate mid distortion control !

I definitely still have a little combo for local gigs without a provided backline.

The guitarists I tour with are both totally ampless as well though, they’re running the Helix units: the rhythm guitarist brought a vintage Marshall half stack on the last run, and quickly realized that the lead player with the modeling unit had better tone every night to go along with his exponentially easier set up/tear down.

Hey Waltsdog, thanks for your response! I guess I should've been more specific about my HX Stomp. I absolutely love it! Such a powerhouse inside a little stomp box frame, and all of their effects are amazing and mesh well with bass. It's my go-to travel rig that never leaves my side.

Right now, I'm just looking for something new to try, that's all. I like using the Kinky Boost, the Scream 808, and some of the other ODs that the Stomp gives, but as a Helix user for quite a while now, it's just getting old on me. I still use them, but I like to be adventurous and experiment with new things, just like you guys do!

Maybe I'm asking for too much lol that's why I handed it off to you guys to see what you're currently using, not what can I use currently. I like using Talkbass as a platform to see what the world around me is doing, helps me widen my perspective. Trust me, I've exhausted the Stomp of all of their effects, their amp models and their tube overdrives (and I mean, ALL of them, bass and guitar included).

After that explanation, hopefully things have been cleared up! Fellow Dingers, as I said before "what are some nice overdrives that you're currently using at the moment?"
