That's fair enough, you could try a Fairfield Barbershop or a Way Huge Pork Loin.

I personally went through about 15 overdrives last year and finally settled on the Alpha Omega Ultra. When I got the Stomp, as a travel rig, I found it could get close enough to that sound with a few layers of OD and EQ so I sold nearly all my pedals.

Hey Waltsdog, thanks for your response! I guess I should've been more specific about my HX Stomp. I absolutely love it! Such a powerhouse inside a little stomp box frame, and all of their effects are amazing and mesh well with bass. It's my go-to travel rig that never leaves my side.

Right now, I'm just looking for something new to try, that's all. I like using the Kinky Boost, the Scream 808, and some of the other ODs that the Stomp gives, but as a Helix user for quite a while now, it's just getting old on me. I still use them, but I like to be adventurous and experiment with new things, just like you guys do!

Maybe I'm asking for too much lol that's why I handed it off to you guys to see what you're currently using, not what can I use currently. I like using Talkbass as a platform to see what the world around me is doing, helps me widen my perspective. Trust me, I've exhausted the Stomp of all of their effects, their amp models and their tube overdrives (and I mean, ALL of them, bass and guitar included).

After that explanation, hopefully things have been cleared up! Fellow Dingers, as I said before "what are some nice overdrives that you're currently using at the moment?"

Maybe try a Southampton 5th Gear. It’s a warm boost / overdrive that sounds great & plays nice with other pedals. Or a Way Huge pork & Pickle.

My original order had a DB Standard, but after staring at the ABZ 4 on the ABZ landing page on the site, I knew that's where my head was. @bebass, you should just make that ABZ 4/3 happen! It'll look really good on ya'...

Man, I can tell you that you are gonna absolutely love the AB4. I hadn’t seen up close an AB4 until the one we just received, as we mostly order 5-string basses, and I am actually as impressed with it as ANY bass we have received from Dingwall. 7.5 lbs of amazement that I can safely bet will make you happy!

“Make that happen”... I sure wish. It so happened that my air conditioning went out and it will cost as much as the bass to get it repaired ...DANG....so I will have to list it. It is currently on hold through next week for Jakka1 to decide if he wants this or a Super series.

I have owned overdrives from EBS and Darkglass and a couple of others. And tried multiple compressors. I can tell you that I have found the overdrive and compressor for me and that I wont be using pedals with it as by itself is exactly what I wanted to hear. The new Forte HP’s distortion circuit and compressor are the best simple & easy that floats my boat; I love it.

...and meanwhile, here I am trying to get the best clean tone possible (although with a slight tube grit and compression from the second channel on my Sunn 300T).

I can tell you that I have found the overdrive and compressor for me and that I wont be using pedals with it as by itself is exactly what I wanted to hear. Is there a video or audio comparison posted somewhere of the Forte HP distortion and Darkglass distortion (Microtubes 900 v2 and Alpha Omega)? A Bergantino setup is the most appealing to me, but Darkglass distortion sounds amazing.

I dont know of any particular one but perhaps if you PM husky123 he may know of some. While I like the DG some it just doesn't do the same thing. The one knob circuit of the Forte HP is so easy to add harmonics and it is a sound I never could quite get with the DG. I can’t discount the variable HPF and LPF interaction, but you should really try one to see for yourself - I was quite blown away with the sound.

Question for the club. Has anyone seen reverse burst finish on an Afterburner? I have been looking and I only see it on Z's.

At a casual suggestion from @Dr. Cheese, I took my ABI to a Wednesday night show. It was a low key show; we played a lot of our normal set, but we play around and take songs in directions they wouldn’t normally go. I had so much fun with the Dingwall that at times I forgot anybody else was in the room - the band, the audience, all of them. Every once in a while the drummer would poke me with a stick to bring me back to the band.

Anyway, I now have another Dingwall on order, and I blame Cheese.

I gladly take the blame! If I were a rich man, I would buy the one with three pickups close together and the Lee Sklar model for myself!

I bought a three-pickup D-Bird Standard. I’ve got a few months to get it paid for, so I’ll probably have it paid for well before I get it.

I played the Canadian model a couple years ago at summer NAMM and got to talk to Sheldon for a while.

Yes. ABZ has ash body AB1 has alder. But a wenge neck is common, pickups are common, and Darkglass pre can be common, and 3x switches can be common. So basically the same bass with different bodywood & finish. Should play the same with slightly different tone that most likely can be compensated for with the pre and switches if there is any difference. Feel should be the same. I was generalizing “AB” and really thinking of Afterburner 4 string in terms that I was confident he would like the bass, but guess I should have been more specific. I still think he will love it. The 4’s necks are amazing.
I think 4’s are still somewhat rare. We still have much more demand for 5’s and even 6’s than 4’s.

I have had a USA Cirrus since they first came out and will probably keep it until I die - I lived one hr from the factory. This is one reason I am so n love with the ABZ 4-string; the neck has the same type of slim profile as the Cirrus.

not sure on the reverse part but definitely the burst part.

There was a black/pink AB burst at NAMM this year I believe.

If your thinking for your build spec I’d have to assume it is of coarse doable.
