dang that D-Bird is sooo loud. I always have to use the active -10db input, or it will clip my Bassman easily.
Has anyone experimented with putting the pickups in parallel mode? That should tame the output a bit.

That would change the tonality of the instrument since it would reduce the mids and increase the highs lows to even out the frequency response more. What is wrong with using the active -10dB input? Or if you are using any pedals you could reduce the gain there. Or... are you ready for a crazy idea? You could turn the volume pot down a small amount on the bass.

Is it too hot in one of the single pickup settings or is it primarily in the 'all three' or bridge/middle setting?
Wiring the pickups in parallel will bring the levels down slightly but that will also change the tone. An easy thing to try would be to lower the pickups. Do it uniformly across all of 'em and count the number of turns you do and write it down so you can bring them back up into the original place if you need.
This 100%, just drop the pickups a few mm if it bothers you (measure first so you can put em back).
It'll control the output and save you having to use the pad.

I do this on my basses because they're active. I back the volume off about 15% from full, then if I find myself in a 'stage emergency' where I need a bit more volume I have somewhere to go at the bass rather than having to walk back to my amp, and find a moment to bring my level up. Though you do have to be careful when you're also dealing with a pedal board where you've got things that are triggered by signal dynamics (compressors or envelope filters, etc.)
...on a D-Bird, which is passive, the roll off may change the tone, which depending on how picky you are about things might not be ideal.
If I ever had a custom built one (can't afford it/don't deserve it) it would have a Wenge neck, ebony fretboard, abalone spedometer inlays and purple burst over ash with a brushed satin metal look pick guard and black nickel hardware. Mmmm.
That Amethyst color is tight, but I already have a flamed F-415 bass and a quilt LTD M-301 (I'm messing with guitar too) so I'm done with figured maple ATM.
I have a Schecter with lumilay side dots- pretty cool stuff, I just don't need it at this point in time I just noodle at home and play at church. Stilletto is going bye-bye, sounds good, but the D and G string are too bright.

It may also give you clearer tone. My dealer recommended lowering the pickup heights from stock for that reason, and I found the change to be a noticeable improvement.

I know it’s not included in the option list. Whenever I’m in a position to actually place an order, I’ll reach out to inquire about my custom request for a Pale Moon Ebony fretboard. If it’ll be possible, they’ll need some time to source it and give me a price.
