People mix them up all of the time. Copyright protects expression of an idea. So movies, photos, books, songs, screenplays, software (only the actual code, not the algorithms that underly the code) are subjects of copyright protection. Trademarks protect indications of source of goods and services. The Dingwall logo (and name) is protected for its ability to identify for those in the market the quality of the products and customer services provided by the company that Sheldon has worked hard to establish. His goodwill if you like.

I just bought a used NG-2 (Ferrarri yellow), so I guess I'm now part of the club?

I have a question for all you Dingwall experts. I've seen photos of the NG-2 with a dark fretboard (not sure what kind of wood) instead of the maple. Was that a very limited run or a custom? It seems the ones that were actually sold in retail were all maple fretboards?

I personally think the dark fretboard looks even better, but it's probably not even available for purchase?

I think all NGs were maple. Combustions did have an option at one point - in fact I think there is one on EBay.

Combustions used to have a Rosewood fretboard option, in the pre-v4 days. I also believe the very first prototype NG-2 that Nolly got had a Rosewood board that he eventually swapped out for Maple.

Pretty sure it was this one with an ebony board, he may have had a rosewood one too at some point though.

My best understanding is this:

The combustion run previously had a rosewood option up until the most recent CITES amendment. This included v4 combustion’s with the square pups.
The current combustion’s have a pau ferro option to replace the rosewood option.

The NGs have been 100% maple other then perhaps as mentioned a few “prototypes” the maple is the Nolly spec.

A few exceptions have been spotted on the wild. I think often people have taken a neck from a combustion and put it on a NG. A few others have had the neck painted. And perhaps even a few more yet have had some custom work done, most likely not at Dingwall, to replace the FB wood.

The NG Being a production bass and have a specific wood spec means there simply is not a variety of options. Mainly color and 2 or 3 pick ups is pretty much it from the factory.

The combustion base model offered the FB wood as an option, limited finishes and there have been ash or alder combustion’s in the past.

Pretty much as Nate says above.
NG's = all maple.
Combustion's = Previously available with Rosewood, now have a Pau Ferro option if you want a dark board.

I have an old Combustion with a dark fb; I am pretty sure it's wenge, though not 100%.

My v1 Combustion is a sonokilin fingerboard (East Indies rosewood, according to my searches which is the same as Indian rosewood except that it is plantation grown).

Good news is that you will get your money back, just make sure to contact PayPal as they move faster than eBay

I’d put money on it not being wenge. That said I don’t mind the odd gamble and it wouldn’t be very much.
I have a few gaps in my Dingwall history but.....

That was close. Thanks to the members here for confirming it was a scam. I'm very disappointed because it's really hard to find a Ferrari yellow NG-2 (or NG-3) 5-string for sale anywhere.

I just emailed Dingwall inquiring about the cost of a custom one with Pau Ferro fingerboard. I'm sure others here have custom-ordered from Dingwall before. What's the extra cost of a custom order?
