I wonder if stainless steel appliance cleaner would work, smells like citrus... maybe even electronics cleaner- it dissolves oils, cleans oxidation and leaves no residue- just don't use it around fire!

My strings last forever, I wash my hands all the time, and I just don't sweat.

I’ve been having some good results with GHS fast fret. I normally MURDER strings, but Fast fret seems to keep the top end and has also brought some strings back to life

Can anyone characterize the difference in sound between Dingwall nickels & Payson reduced core nickels?

I'm looking to get less 'ting' from the D & especially the G string Dingwalls. The B, E & A are fantastic, good heft & harmonic complexity but the D & G sound as if they are from a different brand.
Bass is 2018 Combustion two banger.

Denatured alcohol works really well for me. I’ve had some sitting in this PVC contraption that I made for about 3 years. I usually change the alcohol about every 3 years so I’m due. The strings can hang from the hooks in the cap straight so I don’t have to coil. Works like a champ for me and I can usually get (3-4)24 hour soaks before it’s time for another set.

Any grocery store or pharmacy have denatured alcohol?

Depending on what you are playing, if you can play the D and G no lower than the 4th fret. When I play I avoid 4th and lower on D, 6th and lower on G. This phattens up the tone you get.

I would say they are punchier, modern sounding but to me, the D and G strings sound mellower than normal, which -to me- they sound more in balance.

Before D and G were too twangy for me.

You should be able to get your denatured alcohol there too in the paint department. If you’re doing the tube, pick up a half gallon or so. It’s pretty cheap. Also, don’t forget to use sealer on the bottom end.

It's nice but I'm also a fusspot for tone and I'm finding that the interface, while inviting...I wish had an 'advanced' option. I'd like more control in a bunch of areas. I keep designing sounds then going back and re-designing and redesigning...

Sounds like me with the Helix. It never ends. And another reason why as much as I'd love a C4, I'm concerned I just don't have the time to be able to drive two lots of highly tweakable gear!

Speaking of strings, I’ve been happy with the Dingwall SS strings but on a whim to try something different ordered Payson SS’s. Besides the higher tension, anyone know what I can expect from the Payson’s vs. the DWs? I mean, I’ll know Tuesday but just polling the crowd.

I Know someone with a similar pvc soaker to yours. To me this makes more sense than having to coil each string.

Yeah, I don’t know how much difference it makes because the theory is the full circumference is exposed but it’s just the way I went. The coiled strings in the Tupperware is surely more convenient but I keep this behind the door and don’t even know it’s there until I need it.

Yeah, I never had the motivation to build the tube to do it. Also, it's way more compact to just have a tup rather than that tube. They're not coiled individually anyway...they're all coiled together, super easy to just coil, twist tie and drop 'em in.

I just happened to have bought a few sets of Dingwall strings with dead B strings, so I pulled a B string from my one set of Paysons and it gave me a pretty good A/B while I was playing. The Payson B string seemed to have a little more mid content in the tone. Going back and forth from E to B this became fairly apparent. I would surmise that you would find the Paysons a bit more stiff and a bit more mid-forward. Not a scientific comparison, just my experience. Personally I liked the mid-forward tone of the Paysons, but I prefer the lighter tension of the Dingwalls.

I look forward to your thoughts Lee once you have tried them out.
