I'm sure Payson will correct me if I'm mistaken, but I don't see any "reduced core" strings on his website. I know they were listed in the past, and I've tried them.

Look at the nickel strings. I thought the same thing. It isn't in the name, but the description says "reduced core."

I'm interested in these strings myself.

Reduced cores were my favorite Payson strings, and the medium lights were a close second. Well worth a try.

Ok I see it now. The website design has improved some, but has a ways to go. I've tried the reduced core but found the tension to be a little too much. (I assume "reduced core" means the core wire is hex.) So I switched to the "regular" medium lights instead. Might try the black coated strings when they become available.

My amazingly awesome fiance Bought me a Dingwall NG2 today. The best fiance ever. I had tried another used NG2 at another store a couple of months ago, and loved it (Mopar Purple, an interesting color). It had a problem with one of the EQ pots and they didn't want to discount it (and I didn't have the money anyway) so I didn't get it. The other day my fiance was in GC and texted me that there was a Dingwall. So today we had some time to kill so we went to GC and I tried it. Amazingly punchy sound, and plays great. We had driven separately and met there so we went to our cars and I took off and drove home. My fiance had to pick up her 3 year old from school so she didn't come home immediately. Just as she got home she called me me to help her bring stuff up from the car, and asked me to get the stuff from the back. I opened the hatchback and there was this bass. Like I said, best fiance ever.

Well, I now own 2 ABZ's. To say they are my favorite basses would be an understatement. The black one with the maple neck is all passive with the 3 series/parallel switches for each pickup. The white one has the solid wedge neck and is active with the Darkglass preamp. I think these are the perfect basses for me.

By the way, if anyone is looking for a black combustion pickguard, shoot me a DM. It fits the older square edge pickups. If you have a 4 string NG2 with the squared pickups, this can also allow you to move the "middle" position pickup to a "neck" position. I had it on my NG2 that just sold, as I like the sound of the bass with more of a jazz pickup setting. Picture is the combustion pg on an NG2.

Sorry to change chat direction here, but I have just found a 'Match Made in Heaven'.

Dingwall with new Payson reduced core strings thru' my new Reeves C225.

The PAYSON RC strings arrived just over a week before the Reeves arrived.
I have never been fond of the Dingwall D & G strings, they just don't have a tonal balance
across the strings, OK for slappers but not if you want a more musical, pleasant tone.
I am also not a fan of the 'Nolly' sound, I lean more towards the Squire / Entwistle sound.

Then shortly after that, the REEVES arrived.
This is what I've been after for 58 years !
The uncanny clarity & articulation is magic, & the bottom end is rich, dynamic & hefty.
Having read all the reviews, I thought it would be good, & figured it would be tough to beat my Fender
Bassman 300 Pro, but it surpassed all of my expectations.

Interesting that you should say that, I have heard others comment in a similar vein as me, so I don't think I'm alone. My strings were probably made in 2017/8 & I wonder if Dingwall has changed them since ? Or maybe
mine were a defective batch ? The B, E, & A are superb, but the D & G tone sounded different, like
guitar strings. Give the Payson RC (red packet) a try & let them break in for a couple of days before your
final judgement.

I would love to have tried those revered amps, sadly that hasn't been possible. However, I have read
reports & heard sound samples. I concluded that all those had similar characteristics & I say that loosely.
Where as the Reeves (derived from the Hiwatt DR201) has a distinctive dynamic texture & timbre, which,
I would hazard a guess, was designed, at the time, with diametrically opposed goals for blazing a fresh
new trail in electric bass sound. It is possible to get a smooth creamy bass tone with EQ adjustments,
but for my tastes, that is unexciting & boring, when there is so much more on offer.
I don't expect everyone would agree with me.
Just for clarity, I don't use any pedal effects, no compression & passive signal, but do use a 30Hz HPF.
For comparisons, perhaps Tom Bowlus could offer some comments, I think he has tried most of those amps.

So, how would you describe the differences between the two?
Particularly if you flick the white one to passive?

Way cool! Lots of effort, though, isnt it. We had to do a glamor rock Halloween dress up for a show once and it took almost as long for makeup as it did to play the show.

Halloween every year is a thing. We start planning for it about the first week of November the year before. We have to agree on the theme and then make sure there's do-able costumes that really work for us. For instance, we've talked Star Wars, but you can't do it without Darth Vader and wearing a full face/head mask with no eye or ear holes is pretty impossible. This was an 'easy' year for me. Last year I had a full head frankenstein mask that only had visibility in one eye and no earholes. The year before, Batman was really tough too. The eyeholes don't have enough clearance to really see beyond straight ahead and the mask/cowl precludes swiveling your head.

In the early ‘70’s, I played a couple of sets of prog rock with a keyboardist buddy and his drummer. It was a festival gig, tand we each got an extended solo slot.

I had just picked up an early Roland fuzz-was pedal, and did a slide/feedback breakdown on Somewhere Over the Rainbow, in the style of Hendrix’ Star Spangled Banner.

Strange but true- we were trading sets on the same stage (actually a flatbed trailer) with a traditional Dixieland band. Ther was pretty much 100% turnover between our respective audiences between each set.

Stuff like Somewhere Over The Rainbow is great for fretless training...while I was playing fretted on stage that night, I use songs with really developed and ingrained melodic lines to work on my fretless intonation at home, because you can really hear it be out if you are when you're singing along in your head.

Nice! In wedding related stuff, I set my budget for my wife's engagement ring based upon how much the Rastaburst cost me. Besides my car, it was the possession I'd spent the most $$ on. So if I was willing to spend that on myself, I'm willing to spend it on her.
