Now the bad. The strings are terrible and already talking to the person that can't be mentioned to get some new ones. The neck was way out and I'm surprised it flattened out, but after some time adjusting it plays great. Considering the deal I got on this with the gig bag I think it was worth a bit of drama. :thumbsup:

Congratulations on your beautiful new beast! I've been using Dingwall and Payson nickel rounds on mine. Last night, I strung it up with LaBella tapes - very cool combination. :cool:

I would check with Jason at FretNation.com. He can tell you what works with Dingwall longscale basses. That’s my go to string source. Fast, free shipping, rewards points, and it remembers previous orders for easy reorder. Discounts for TB members.

Both Dingwall and Payson have stainless steel string offerings. These will be tapered at both ends and are an easy drop in fit.

I’ve been using DR Pure Blues VW .040 on my four string AB and Dbird. The E string just makes the nut.

I only use nickel strings, so I’m not really up on stainless strings to fit Dingwalls.

I rather like having lines. Some day I'd like to try one without (or with minimal markers like @AB Nate ) and see how I fare. I had a couple notes today I really needed to pay attention to, but in general it went very well.

The only thing I don't like about lines is people don't realize it is fretless. "It's fretless, don't I get some props for that?" ;)

Was just poking through the Dingwall website again (once in a while I have to drool about the wood room) and saw they have a Finishes and Neck Inlay options pages. Here is what they are showing for fretless. I thought the original layout had no dots on it at all.

I feel like this is a new page...Did I miss it before? I've seen the finishes page, but I don't remember the Inlay options page. If it is new, where's the ghost blocks and speedo bars? I'm trying to imagine if ghost dots might be viable?! The next pbass6811 Dingwall will have some kind of "ghost" inlay, fo' sho'!!

Those dots wouldn’t have been a bad idea, particularly above the 12th fret.

I hadn't seen the finishes page either, so not sure when it was added. Yeah, they're going to have to update some options for inlays... Probably could use some adds on finishes, too.

Dingwall was kind enough to include a set of wrenches with your bass that would be perfect for this task. 3a. If only the middle pickup responds to the light tapping, you have a D-Bird Switch.
3b. If only the two outer pickups respond to the light tapping, you have a 3X Switch.

If you can't tell the difference, either (a) you are tapping too hard, or (b) you have been playing too much without hearing protection. :) In this case, remove the rear cavity cover and examine the circuit board attached to the pickup selector. It will be printed with either "3X" or "DB".

Some folks might say that another way to tell is by placing the pickup selector in position #4, plugging in to a big amp, and turning it about half way up, then start playing. If you are knocked over by a massive wall of sound unlike anything you have ever heard before, then you have a D-Bird switch.

I just ordered all the associated hardware to convert my NG2 to 3X, so i hope they sent me the 3X pickup selector. I didn't know about this selector switch thing until just now reading it !!!!

I really have no idea why people are so anti-DRoc switch in everything but D-Rocs?! I don't get it. Even Lee Sklar prefers the "all pickups on" setting on his basses. The only reason I can see is some folks want the "j-bass" setting. Why not just get a two-pickup bass and there you go?!

All of my Dingwall's have 3 pickups, the D-Roc switch, and my ABZ's all have the S/P switches. My go to live setting is "all pickups on, all in series" because it sounds MASSIVE! With a tiny bit of knob twiddling, I can get almost any sound I want out of that.

@AB Nate is right, 3 pickups, the D-Roc switch, the S/P switches, and the DGTC make for a pretty versatile setup...

I'm not saying everyone needs to switch to the D-Roc switch, but I feel like some people are immediately dismissing the D-Roc switch without really trying to make it work.

Exactly!

The first time I tried "all pickups on", I thought there would be no way to make that setting work. Once I got to the point of experimenting where I turned the bass knob down to 1/3 or 1/4 (something that was incomprehensible to me coming from my other, two pickup, bass), I started to find some sweet spots. And this is with a DGTC.

I don't use that setting for everything (maybe 2/3 the time?), but it's my "go to" warm setting when playing in church. I originally thought it would only work for crazy scary death metal. Haha.

I'm disappointed that my Combustion (when it arrives next month) will not have a "3 pickups on" setting. I never solo pickups, so I am thinking rewiring will be in order.

Instead of:

  1. Bridge
  2. Bridge/middle series
  3. Bridge/neck parallel
  4. Neck
How about:

  1. All on (parallel)
  2. unchanged
  3. unchanged
  4. All on (bridge middle parallel, neck) - kind of like a MM with an extra p/u?
Just a thought. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will come along any second and explain why this won't work. :-)
