So... what's Selta doing with his next build?
The basics:
Z series, 5 string. Two pickups, in the kinda jazz spacing (I think this is Z2 moniker). Fancy wood top (TBD which in the wood room, none jump out enough yet). Undetermined finish, but, have a couple ideas in mind. Wenge neck, wenge fingerboard, drop-D tuner. From factory it'll come with the glock preamp... but this, my friends is where the magic will happpen.
I have, in my grubby little hands,
two preamps. Huh? Well, it was truly about the only option I had that was reasonable to do what I want.
For a long time, I haven't been over the moon about preamp choices out there. Don't get me wrong, the Glock and Darkglass are fine preamps, servicing many thousands of Dingwalls (and other builders). They work well for everything I do with each of my other Dingwalls. I don't intend on putting those preamps down.
Just, over about the past year or so, I've been finding myself wanting... different. In my test mule AB1 (the blue one), I've put probably a dozen different preamps from everyone I could find, and while each does things differently, none were getting me where I was wanting to go with this new build.
So, looping back... how does two preamps solve my issue, if one preamp doesn't really do what I am searching for?
This is where it gets interesting. Or dumb. I dunno which yet.
@Sheldon D. and crew are probably sick of Chad (local bass shop,
The Bass Shop | Selected Used and Vintage Bass Guitars) calling and asking for absurd things.
So I sourced two preamps. Not just any two though. These things took me the better part of 3 months of emails begging to get.
I have two, ACG EQ-02 preamps sitting here.
The idea is... one preamp, one pickup. Each pickup will have a high and low pass filter, with sweep-able frequency and level.
It's simple, but, it's going to be
awesome. I'm not entirely certain the stock Dingwall pickups are going to play particularly nice with this pre, sooo I've been doing some light inquiring to other winders (including a rather unknown local to me winder) for some thoughts and possible options if it comes down to it.
As far as I know, this will be the first and possibly only filter preamp Dingwall out there. I'm super stoked for it, even with things that I still need to figure out (i.e. ripping out the glock, drilling a 6th pot hole, power, etc). I can't wait for the bass to be done so I can start the rest of the work
