I've got some Dingwalls with Schallers but they are all the old one. I don't like the idea of a fixed screw. Maybe there is some benefit, but I'd rather put the original back in. Would be happy to hear thoughts on that. All of my newer Dingwalls have Dunlop strap locks because they came that way from the factory.

I put the Dunlop Strap Locks on my NG, because I like the Dunlop's and it now matches my Canadian Dingwall's, so I can move straps without issue. I also put the Dunlop's on my FBass.

No, none around Syracuse, Utah. I had a spectacular AB15 courtesy of Singlmalt, now gone that was a delight and light. Sadly, my Classic Country/rock band is no more, and with it a 5er need.

But I am getting along nicely on Epiphone Embassy Pro's which not only have Thunderbird PUP's, but are 34" scale with a 1.65" wide nut. Best of all, all 3 of mine are UNDER 8 lbs, the lightest at 7 lb 6 oz. Better yet, with case, upgraded tuners, upgraded to CTS pots and wired series/parallel, the most expensive was $350. No way in the Dingwall craftsmanship world, but to these 67 year old fingers and covid era finances; and playing Hard/Classic Rock, I'm covered.

That said, my SJ5XXX is here til I check out.

I just bought a set of the newer S-locks and put the pins on a bass. Yes, the pin and screw is all one piece that tightens with a hex wrench.

Previously, I was using drywall screws and grinding the heads so that they would fit in the centre of the strap pins. The screw threads are much more aggressive, and I add a little carpenters glue to the threads putting them in. The reason I use drywall screws is that is what was on the Dingwalls when I bought them (2004/2005) with the regular pins. I was surprised when I took them to the hardware store to match them up.

Yes, so the new screw threads fit directly into my other bass with no problems. I haven't installed the strap ends, but the fit is tighter and there is almost no play between the two. They also fit on the older model pins and visa versa, but are maybe a little looser.

I have too many basses and straps with the Schallers to change now. The only drawbacks have been that they can work the pins loose and strip the wood, although that has not been a problem since I have gone to the drywall screws and glue. The other thing is that they can sometimes squeak a little, but apparently that has been solved with the new design.

I also used to put some Locktite on the nut threads of the strap hardware of the older models.

I have heard horror stories about the bearings not fully engaging on the Dunlops and having the bass make a trip to the floor. I am not sure any design is perfect. I am satisfied with the Schallers.

I still have a few sets of the Twistlock strap locks left. I like them, they will not fail. See in Classifieds.

Sorry, that was just me being snarky about the huge markdown on that Droc listing. Dropping the the price from $10k to right about msrp.
I frequently forget that sarcasm doesn’t always fly in print. Forgot my eye rolling emoji:thumbsup:

I find the Dbird to be very comfortable. Slightly heavier than my super light AB, a little over 8 lb, but it hangs nice. Comfortable sitting too. And it sounds really good.

I went from Schallers to Dunlops on my basses, mainly because of the recessed rear one, but you do have to double check the Dunlops are engaged "before" you throw a bass over your shoulder.

If I did not require the rear one I would have stayed with Schaller but the built in screw on them is a backwards step IMHO. It prevents the use of a longer screw if the body wood is a bit soft. "not on the Dingwall of course"

It looks as if longer screw/pins are available on the new Schaller S-Locks ( S-Locks ), but only one length comes in the package. I agree, they should have kept them as separate parts and with a Philips head rather than a hex.

The pickguard material wasn’t cheap but I wanted high quality. It should look great on my NG3’s white pearl finish.

Possibly. I have a template made for the future. But I’ll need to invest in a better router setup to consider making more in the future. The one I have is a little sketchy and required a ton of filing and sanding by hand to get it right. Wouldn’t be worth my time to do it like that again.
