Has anyone used the Payson stainless sets and could you comment on how the texture differs from the standard Dingwall sets? My absolute favorite strings of all time are D'Addario ProSteels. They almost feel like velcro under my fingertips and make bending and pull-offs extremely easy. The Dingwall stainless sets are really good, but they aren't as rough or tacky and I've been curious how other brands compare.

Speaking of Strings I've come full circle and am back to the standard Dingwall strings. The Payson reduced cores sound great but in the end the high tension was too much for my little girly hands especially trying to play near the bridge.

This has been covered here before but both strings (to me) have a similar tone and sound great with a little more bass to the Paysons. The coating on my fingers feels similar also but there definitely is a significant difference in tension. Both awesome for different reasons.

I believe that the extended tuning dingwalls have changed manufacturers a couple of times. No complaints here, but they may not be a fixed point.

Agreed -- can't go wrong with either Dingwall or Payson strings. Currently playing the Payson reduced core Nickel's.

I really like the Payson SS strings. They seem to fade a bit quicker then the dingwall strings but the feel is awesome. .... perhaps slightly grabber, I haven’t put a new set on in a while. Tonally I think they are magic.

Back to DW SSs too.
The paysons were nice, a bit bigger gauges, a bit lower tension, tonally great, I didn't like how they tend to roll under the fingers when you do bends though.
It wouldn't be the end of the world if they were the only available strings though, they're good and definitely worth a try if you don't like the DWs for one reason or another IMHO.

My Dbird came with Dingwall stainless strings. I tried, but they ate my fingers up in a couple days. I just can’t do the grippy, grabby, feel. And after going down the light gauge road, .045’s felt really stiff and heavy.

That’s just me, though, the strings sounded great. Stainless just doesn’t work for me.

The nickels from Payson are very nice, and the flats are very cool.

I’ve been extolling the DR Pure Blues VW set, .040, for the longscale four strings. The E just makes the nut on the AB and Dbird.

As always, if I have string questions or needs, I go to Jason at FretNation.com. Custom sets of individual strings are available. He knows what will fit on Dingwalls.

I mentioned this over on the FB group but it's been a while since there was any action in this thread...

For the past month or two, I've been having a certain bass show up in my dreams. Not like daydreaming about a bass or any of that. In fact I haven't really thought about this particular bass in a meaningful way at all. Odd right? Not one of my usuals (though they have also made appearances over the years too)...but a specific and identifiable one.

Sooo. I dropped a quick email to one of the lovely people at Dingwall...and with a few back-and-forths...I should have an invoice in the next day or so. Looks like I'll be seeing a Super P/J sometime in a year or so.

The bass will be this color

Or this depending on light and all (I referenced both):

5 string, gloss black pickguard, chrome hardware (70's muscle car-inspired basses need chrome, yo.)

But in my dream it has a DARK fretboard and classic dot inlays. So ebony board with dots. I've asked if they can do push/pull knobs for coil P/S switching and I'm waiting to hear back on that...but all in all, good to go.

I figured you can only hold out on the mysticism of a dream telling you something for so long.

Of course, such car/instrument metaphors are so...passé. Instead, I offer a prime inspiration for my existing blue and black Z2, which was something far more cerebral:

I'm sorry you don't too. my iteration will have a dark fretboard and 'classic' dots. I have 4 Dingwalls currently...two maple boards, one Pau Ferro and one rosewood. I specified 'dark wood'...Also a rarity for me...I don't usually like black pickguards but it just feels more badassy this way.

That's Jag, definitely.

To me the P-Bass is a brute force brawn over finesse instrument. Sort of like an early 70's muscle car...they didn't have the aerodynamics on their hand...the had brute force...

Not that old. My V3 Combustion that's now fretless is a farmed rosewood board. The oldest one is my Voodoo Prima, one of the earliest batch of production basses and that's pau ferro.

Alder or maple?

Alder body rather than swamp ash. I really liked the alder in my passive AB1 and I like my NG. I also have two ash bodied Dingwalls (Combustion fretless & the Rastburst) so I don't feel like I'm missing out. My old 73 precision was an alder body as well and I loved how that sounded. My one oddity is the Voodoo Prima...it's a mahogany bodied Dingwall. I don't see a ton of those.
